Review: Background to Ghibli Studios - Not finnished reading yet but a very full story of how Ghibli Studios started. Review: The history of a genius. - Yes,a very good and entertaining read about how a genius has to strive to overcome prejudice and opposition to be able to enrich beyond measure the rest of the world.I for one am very grateful for his renowned determination and vision.Hayao Miyazaki has certainly brought many hours of absolute joy and entertainment to my life. Following my reading of this wonderful book,I re watched all Studio Ghibli films to experience the techniques mentioned in his interviews. In the original Japanese format,of course. So that's even more hours of joy to be thankful for...YAY Miyazaki ! It was good to also learn about the origins of Nausicaa and the trials that were overcome to bring us this amazing story. I went straight to desertcart to get the original manga Box set.Luck me..,I'm nearly the happiest person in the known Universe ! I must be in the top 10..,surely ?! Anyway, the style and questions at the interviews Miyazaki attended were very revealing for me and I enjoyed some blistering replies ! There appear to be some commentators/reviewers who don't seem to appreciate an honest or heartfelt opinion.Sour grapes,if you ask me.You can't fault a man who readily documents and admits his own shortcomings.I admire him. An excellent book if you want to know more about how a master craftsman goes about creating a masterpiece. Obviously,as Hayao readily admits,it takes a team to complete the film but the ideas have to come from someone. This book reveals where and how those gems came from and the development process. That's what I wanted and that's what I got. I must be in the top 9..,surely ?

Must read for a Anime lover!
I read the first volume as well, it’s amazing to see Mizayaki thinking and how he developed in his art. I’m a big supporter of his work but after this I appreciate even more how much work and passion it goes to create those masterpieces.

Super great book for its texts, but missed more illustrations!
It was a gift for a friend and she loved it. Great work, so complete, but also we missed more images by Miyazaki. The book contains some illustrations in the middle but it is true that, although it would make it a super big book, we would have loved to see much more illustrations accompanying the text.

A very enjoyable and inspiring book related to Studio Ghibli studios and the films produced. I feel it could have been a bit more colourful and interesting to look at and include more sketches and drawings.

El libro llegó rápido, y en buen estado. Es un buen libro donde se comenta los detalles de las películas de Hayao miyasaki desde el punto de vista de alguien que estuvo cerca en diferentes etapas. El libro viene en inglés.

The delivery from Amazon was prompt and well-packaged, as expected. No complaints on that front. As for the book itself — Starting Point is a gem for anyone interested in storytelling, animation, and the creative mind of Hayao Miyazaki. His thoughts are honest, deep, and incredibly inspiring. A must-read for artists and dreamers alike. Truly admire the writer's ability to articulate such layered philosophy in such a grounded way. However, I did notice a few signs that made the book feel slightly used — faint creases and minor wear on the cover. While it doesn’t affect the content, I just expected a more pristine condition for a new purchase. Overall, still a fantastic buy for the wisdom inside. Worth it for Miyazaki fans and creatives.

I love this book! It's a fantastic read by a brilliant mind. This is not a novel but instead a collection of thoughts and essays compiled by Miyazaki, placed in chronological order. Having the book set up as a compilation makes it a great read before bed or something you are just looking to pick up once in a while. Of course you can read it all at once! but I feel that allowing each passage to sink in really helps to deliver the full effect.
