Would this be okay on an open fire/BBQ?

Yes, no problem at all with open flames, fire pits, BBQ's, and gas hobs. Tip of the day, if you use kettles and pots over open fires regularly, don't clean the outside of them, let them go black. The colour black absorbs heat faster than polished steel and boil times are reduced. I have only been brushing the soot of pots with a rag and letting them stay black for years now.I bought this kettle a few months ago to replace an old one I had for about thirty years. Its robust and works fine. Its also jet black from the fire now.I hope this helps.

Does the lid fit tight?

I'd say it fits tight enough, ie it'll come off if you shake it enough. Probably similar to your kettle at home. I've certainly not had any problems.

would a wood gas stove fit inside this kettle

The opening is 116mm diameter with a depth of about 73mm in the middle, a 230g Butane canister will fit inside but the kettle lid will not sit correctly however you can fit a 100g canister and stove plus lighter and folding spoon with no problem with the lid in place, an Esbit folding cooker also fit nicely inside instead and the kettle sits well on to of it, as far as a wood stove it will depend on the dimensions
