Hi friend :-) This is a card reader, not a barcode scanner, it is used to read standard ISO magnetic cards, so it cannot read 1D barcode and 2D barcode. We are a manufacturer of scanners and card readers. Can provide OEM, Solutions and Technical Support. You can enter our store to browse scanners. Or check the links below, they are all the hot-selling scanners. 1D Scanner: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XSGXVXB?ref=myi_title_dp https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08TMKBBD3?ref=myi_title_dp 2D Scanner: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08TLPYCM1?ref=myi_title_dp https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0895X3YFJ?ref=myi_title_dp Best wishes, Amily

I keep getting this error message: We're sorry, there was an error processing this transaction. Even with different cards. Help please?

Please change the software for transactions.

Can this be configured to work on a computer with a keyboard already attached - as an additional input device?

Yes we use them as point of sale devices

is the software available to program it?

Since we were replacing an old magnetic cc reader all we had to do was plug it up and it worked. No programming was needed.
