Seemed like a really good controller for about 5 minutes until the R2 button stopped working is there anything I can do?

Get a pin or a toothpick and at the back of the controller there is a tiny hole on the left (if looking at back) right (if looking from front) stick it in till u hear a click this resets the controller usually works like a charm mate

Can the controller be used in ps4 safe mode?

I think so but not 100% sure (I don't know all the technical terms) However, I'd advice against buying this controller. I had it about 2 months and it gave up the ghost. Better spending the money on an official one from PlayStation.
