The Filmmaker's Handbook (Fifth Edition): A Comprehensive Guide for the Digital Age

I was blown away with the volume and quality of information contained in this book. It's well researched and written in a way that amateur and professional film makers will benefit. Already (only had it for a week), I have learnt so much more about cameras, filming, sound recording and project planning etc., and I really thought I knew it all! It doesn't matter if you are amateur (like me), or professional, this book will serve you well. Highly recommended.

Very informative for someone who's passionate about film.making, this book contains EVERYTHING from sound to pre-production to whatever you can think of. BE AWARE! Some of the content may be getting a bit outdated such as the actual 'film' parts, but it's always good to know about the non-digital era. It's like saying we shouldn't watch citizen kane or casablanca as they're old and we should watch Gravity. No that's not right, therefore I'm not rating this book down for that. Would recommend this!

I am an IT pro (paye 30 years - where did it go). This book is the real deal in an age of fast buck technology titles. It was an expensive Kindle title (by consideration of platform) but contains valuable content. It details the rudiments of digital filmmaking and real world experience. This discipline is important to me, its well researched and articulated, I highly recommend.

If you think you know it all, this book will prove you wrong. It's an easy read, as it is written using a near to every day language. You won't find yourself struggling with terminology if you start at the very beginning. However, you may find yourself struggling if you chose to dive into the middle without experience. It is both teacher and reference manual. It mentions aspects of filming you would never think of, and for those of us with a passion for making movies, it will become a constant companion. It is the most comprehensive book about film making that I have ever encountered. It wasn't written in a hurry, it was written with the wisdom of a born teacher possessing a fountain of knowledge that only comes with years of experience. It is a truly impressive work, accomplished with aplomb.

This is an update of an older edition and contains quite a bit of pre-digital details but it also contains useful information related to digital. I have not read it from cover to cover yet but have referred to parts which I found very helpful.

Anything related to video filming and I mean absolutely anything is in this book, highly recommend

This book is an excellent book to have as a reference for anyone who hopes to make films. If you know what you're doing and just need a reference source or need some guidance to get started, this book is great! I highly recommend it!

Why a 4? Because it contains more information than I would ever need. However, If you have an abiding interest in everything to do with imaging, both technical and artistic as I do, and if you have the fortitude you could read this REFERENCE book from the first page to the last; and providing you have a photographic memory, there could be very little left you would need to look up. I have found answers on filming and the film industry, camera equipment (it includes DSLR movie making) lighting, moviemaking techniques etc., and I have hardly touched the surface! If you are an occasional videographer then this book gives too much information. If you nevertheless would like this book for reference, as you may wish to further your understanding some time in the future, I would buy it for the bookshelf tomorrow! I haven't found a more comprehensive book, and at 818 pages it's a steal. CEDO

Ik had dit boek gekocht, omdat het door verschillende mensen was aanbevolen. Ik denk dat dit het meest complete boek over film- en video maken is, wat ik ooit heb gelezen. Hoewel niet alles direct op mijn eigen interessesfeer van toepassing is, is alles op zo'n interessante manier geschreven, dat ik me ook door de hoofdstukken heen heb gelezen die mij eigenlijk niet zouden moeten interesseren. Deels is het jammer dat alle foto's en illustraties in zwart wit zijn, maar dat houdt een boek van dit formaat betaalbaar. Van harte aanbevolen voor iedereen die serieus met video bezig is of bezig wil gaan.

Amazing Book, this is all you need for a basic understanding of Filmmaking. Very detailed and reliable information included with Visuals. It can also be considered as a great book if you're preparing for Film school entrance exams.

There are not many books on the market that cover so many different aspects of analogue and digital cinematography. It provides a good overview of relevant topics but does not go too much into the technical details.

The Film-Makers Handbook is thorough. It has so much information about multiple types of cameras, shots, the difference in taking a closer pic or simply zooming in. Covers everything you would want to know even if you didn't know to look it up. Plenty of photos to describe the text. Enjoying learning new things.
