Rust-Oleum Tub & Tile Gloss Coastal Fog 2-Part Refinishing Kit

First of all let me just say right up front. I am 72yrs old and yes I have used this product and my review is my honest opinion. No one has offered me anything for my opinion and I do not have an agenda for giving my option. It is honest and true. That being said I will tell anyone who wants to know. I have read some of the positive and some of the negative reviews. Ther is a lot of truth in both. Except where someone who has been lazy and down right negative from the start. Does this product have a strong odor? Yes yes yes it definitely does. Is this product easy to use? Let me say this. If you are afraid of a little hard work and just plain lazy you need to look else where. But if you want a nice looking clean looking outcome and dont mind the work then this is your product. I have just finished my second tub unit. First I researched this product throughly last year before Thanksgiving. I have a own ŵhouse that was built in 1986 that was my mom's. It's mine now. I have done a lot of work in it and wanted to do something in the bathroom with the fixtures. The tub unit was original the toilet and sink had been replaced with white. The tub was that brown color and was faded looking. I didn't want the expense to replace it so I looked at options. That's how I found the Rustoleum tub and tile gloss white finish. The price was right and I was willing to get my hands dirty and work hard. Let me just say right here. A negative mind produces a negative out come. ALWAYS. I was skeptical to say the least. Do I expect this to be a job that will last 50yrs? No i do not. Do I expect this finish to look like a factory produced new unit? No I donot. Now right down to the truth. Starting out with a dark color going to an expected white finish I knew was going to be a.challenge to begin with. If at all possible. I am not a professional painter nor a contractor of any kind. With the cost roughly around $50 how could go wrong. Let me say yes there is a very strong odor. I used a respiratory and highly recommend using one. The first coat is just a base coat. DO NOT keep going over the same area . It will get tacky and not do well. Start with a thin coat and move on. Don't linger and waste time. If you don't have a couple hours to devote to this project do not start it. Cover with the base coat. Don't expect great coverage to begin with. Wait at least one hour before a second coat. Do expect there to be some minor streaks. If you encounter bumps and little specks then after that first hour lightly use a t least a 220 grit sand paper. This is not a job for the lazy. Continue with the second coat. Do not work slowly. Take the time to work with it but do not keep going over the same area. The product self levels as time goes on. I used three -four coats. DO NOT use a foam roller whatsoever!! It will come desolve and come apart melt if you will. I made.this mistake . I changed to another type 1/4 in nap. And finished allowing it to dry. After Christmas I used 220 grit WET sanded it and applied another coat this week. It is a very nice finish. Yes it does have a texture to the finish. Some have referred to as orange peel. That is true but ok in my book. I don't know how this product will hold up over the ⁴long haul but listen it looks very nice I am happy with it and my friend had me just finish her tub yesterday. Long story short. Would I recommend this product....if you are not afraid of a little work and willing to have a positive attitude and realistic expectations then go for it. I can't speak of how long this product will hold up over the.long haul but if it lasts for a few years it will be well worth the money. I can always do it again. And not have spent thousands for a new tub. But in my opinion I do have a.new tub. Thanks for your time. Now go do some work and get yourself a great looking clean tub..and get over the fear of the fumes.

The rust-oleum product was great to refinish the tile surround of my tub - it was a little watery to work with at first even though I stirred for quite a while - perhaps I should have stirred longer. Be sure to prep your surface well and tape off an cover any surfaces you do not want to get paint on. I ended up doing 3 coats and waiting for at least an hour between coats. 1 can was plenty for the area I completed - I still had a 1/4 can left when I was completed. The bug negative I have with this product is the odor. I opened the windows, had a fan going and wore a face mask but that was not enough. As other reviews have stated, this stuff has a strong, toxic odor. Definitely do not go with a regular paining mask - make sure to order an industrial respirator if you do not have one - you will need it. The toxic smell permeated throughout my whole house - I ended up having to open multiple windows and it took about a day for the smell to dissipate. With all that said, the finish turned out nice - very glossy and looks like it was always white. As you can see from the picture I had a brownish/beige tile and a white tub - the rustoleum paint is so white it makes my tub look like gray now - not a big deal but just something to note. It's only been about 3 weeks since I completed this project so I can't attest to how it will hold up yet - will update if any issues with adhesion arise. I also had to refinish my walk in shower as well but I ended up buying another product that had low odor because I could not imagine dealing with the toxic smell again so I used DWIL Tub and Tile refinishing for the shower - it was a little more expensive but has little to no odor - it worked fine but does not have that glossy shine like rust-oleum. Overall, if you can get pass the dealing with the odor for a day then, for $43 this is a good product to use to make a great upgrade to old tiles.

We painted a 1950's avocado green bathtub with this kit and it looks amazing I read the reviews where people said the paint is very strong smelling and it is, but not as bad as I actually thought it was gonna be. We didn't even wear a mask. It did end up taking about 4 Coats. And I used a roller meant for enamel, and it left a texture, which is fine. It did seem to go on smoother at the top edges with a brush, but overall, I do love it. And I am hoping that it weathers, well

The product itself works well and delivers great coverage, but there are definitely some things you need to know before using it. First off, they really should include information on what type of brushes or rollers to use. You can’t just grab any brush. it has to be a specific kind. The paint has a spray-paint-like texture: it’s very sticky and grabs onto everything, including cheap brush hairs, which end up stuck in the finish and ruin the look. The smell is extremely strong. it’s not just unpleasant, it’s borderline overwhelming. A regular mask won’t help. You’ll feel lightheaded fast, so make sure you have a huge open window and at least two large fans going. Even then, you’ll need to take breaks often and avoid being in the space for too long. Also, while the paint dries very quickly (which is good), it also means you can lose product fast if you’re trying to ventilate properly. And be careful if you get this paint on anything, nail polish remover works best to clean it off. Overall, it’s a solid product if you’re prepared and know what you’re getting into. Just be cautious, follow safety steps, and don’t take shortcuts

So far so good. Looks amazing but have not gotten it wet yet. Fingers crossed it will hold up and clean well. I used a 2" standard paint brush. Fumes are extremely strong, a quality paint fume respirator is a must. Was stinging my eyes a bit also while applying. Had all doors and windows open and fans. Takes at least 24 hours for the house to begin to be going back to normal, more 48 to lose the smell. Need to work fast, especially on the second coat. From all I can see from cleaning up some areas on the drain etc that I got this epoxy on and needed to remove, it is a very durable product. I did two coats on my tub (did not paint the one exterior vertical side, I blended it over the edge, as that side was in great condition. And I still had some left over so I did one heavy coat on a small shower stall floor.

THE SMELL IS 100% NOT WORTG BUYING THIS PRODUCT! I read the reviews before purchasing so I had some knowledge that the smell was a little strong. But oh my gracious! No matter how many Air Drs, fans, vents we had open and moving, the smell was absolutely overwhelming and painful. If you have children and you decided to do this, you must be out of the house for a week MINIMUM in order for the smell to dissipate some. Our whole home smelled like I painted every wall with nail polish, and it smelled like that for over a week. SO SO SO STRONG! My poor children! While doing it, my eyes became blood red and they stung due to the off gas of it. I couldn’t open them, they were watering non stop, and stinging like crazy! The product came with enough for two coats, but that wasn’t enough. It will probably need another one or two coats to not be transparent but I will NEVER but this again. I will look for a low or no VOC bath paint. Also, because this paint is so trying, it literally disintegrated my roller brush! By the second coat, it was falling apart and leaving little bits behind because it was disintegrating. This whole project was a wash. I wish I could give this 0 stars. It literally ruined our lives for 2 weeks because of the strong smell that would not freakin leave our home. Quality bad, color bad, smell bad ALL BAD. Do not buy this.

I bought 2 cans to resurface my guest bathroom. The first can went on perfectly! But the second can bubbled on the walls. It does smell but with a respirator it is manageable.

The Rust-Oleum Tub and Tile Refinishing Kit has completely transformed my dated bathroom at a fraction of the cost of replacement. My old bathtub was stained, discolored, and frankly embarrassing - now it looks absolutely pristine and modern in gloss white. The 2-part system is well-designed and user-friendly. The instructions are clear and comprehensive, walking you through each step from preparation to final coating. While the process requires attention to detail, it's definitely manageable for a DIY project. The 32 oz coverage was perfect for my standard-sized tub with some left over for touch-ups. Preparation is key, and the kit provides everything needed for proper surface prep. Following the instructions exactly resulted in excellent adhesion and a smooth, professional-looking finish. The etching solution worked effectively to create the right surface texture for the coating to bond properly. The finish quality is remarkable. The gloss white coating dried to a beautiful, durable surface that feels smooth to the touch and looks exactly like a factory finish. The coverage is even with no streaks, bubbles, or thin spots when applied according to directions. It's been six months since application, and the finish still looks perfect with daily use. Durability has exceeded my expectations. Regular cleaning with standard bathroom cleaners hasn't affected the finish at all. No chipping, peeling, or wear patterns despite constant use. The surface resists stains and soap scum buildup much better than the original tub surface. This kit saved me thousands compared to bathtub replacement while delivering professional-quality results. Highly recommend for anyone looking to refresh their bathroom affordably!

Takes a few coats didn’t quite get finish I wanted on the sink. But struggled with roller type. Very smelly for 3 days. But overall good product

Made my bathtub new again

Absolutely love this product! Actually ordered another one to add to my project! Gave me exact results i was looking for! Cost me 200$ to make my ugly bathroom completely retiled professionally!!! Porcelaine finish! Would have cost minimum 1000$ to retile plus the hassle! Took 3 hours in all for 2 coats of magic! Very impressed! and i never really take the time to review…but believe this product… and result of my reno.. deserves it! Recommend 200%

I completed this project about 2 months ago and so far so good. This is my first major DIY project and I am pretty pleased with how it turned out. It certainly wasn’t easy and what I thought was going to only take a couple days took almost a week, but not because of the paint. The prep work was tedious and long and I also have a large window in the shower I needed to refinish with different products. When it came to the epoxy paint, I leaned in the first coat how quickly it dries. I ended up predominantly using my foam roller and I moved quick. The paint is self levelling so it was forgiving in that sense. This paint in two coats covered an old brown tile color beautifully and is going to help updating the bathroom a coat effective project. The smell is a serious thing. I think my house smelled like the middle of a paint can for 4 days. So if you have small children or scent sensitive people in your house, doing this project when there will be lots of time out of the house might be best. Overall very happy with the outcome. It was hard work but wasn’t as scary as it felt getting started. I’ve already purchased the touch up kit in the event I need it. I might use it to touch up a couple spots where I wasn’t as even on the grout.
