Steve Carell (The 40-Year-Old Virgin), reprising his role as the polished, preening newscaster Evan Baxter of Bruce Almighty, is the next one anointed by God to accomplish a holy mission in the hilarious new comedy Evan Almighty. Blockbuster comedy director Tom Shadyac (The Nutty Professor, Liar Liar, Bruce Almighty) returns behind the camera for this next episode of divine intervention. This time, however, his cast grows two-by-two. Newly elected to Congress, Evan leaves Buffalo behind and shepherds his family to suburban northern Virginia. Once there, his life gets turned upside-down when God (Morgan Freeman) appears and mysteriously commands him to build an ark. But his befuddled family just can't decide whether Evan is having an extraordinary mid-life crisis or is truly onto something of Biblical proportions... Giving Steve Carell a long-overdue leading role in a mainstream Hollywood comedy, Evan Almighty is the sequel to the huge Jim Carrey hit Bruce Almighty . And while Carrey isnt on the cast list this time round, director Tom Shadyac and Morgan Freeman are among the many returnees. The focus of Evan Almighty switches to Carells Evan Baxter, last seen as a newsreader but now an elected official, who is chosen by God (Freeman) to build a new ark. And this ark needs, as youd expect, to hold two of each species on the planet. Naturally, all the people around Evan think hes gone mad, and this proves a healthy comedy mine thats well exploited. Evan Almighty isnt without a few problems, though. The focus of the film isnt always tight enough on generating the laughs, and Carell is surprisingly under-used. Hes on form when the material allows him to shine, but its often (admittedly impressive) special effects that end up taking centre stage, an odd road to choose for a comedy. That said, Evan Almighty is still an enjoyable family comedy, and its not without rewatch value. Its a fun little movie, and one that deserves extra credit for promoting Carell to top billing--that's a move long overdue. -- Jon Foster Review: Evan Almighty - Love this film! Evan Almighty
Love this film! Odered on recommendation from a friend. The overall message in the story is great and love the animals 'helping' to build the ark. Good all round family film,funny and includes messages about loving the planet, working together and believing in yourself. My favourite film ever
I have watched this film dozens of times so thought I would get my own copy. The film has many messages which mankind would do well to take in, whilst being fun to watch and the effects are very good. Tom Shadyac is one of the enlightened people of our time and this film reflects what he is about. Brill film.

Wonderful, funny and a joy to watch
I love this thoroughly enjoyable romp, I've been looking forwards to watching this for sometime now and it did not disappoint. Steve Carell reprises his role of Evan Baxter in Bruce Almighty and is excellent, but not as full on as he can be, for me that did not matter in this film, good solid support is provided by Lauren Graham and John Goodman, plus the wonderful if under used Morgan Freeman as God. You could say by the end of the film that this is not about saving animals at all, I'd say it's more about discovering things about yourself and becoming a better person, but regardless there are plenty of laughs to be had, the animals look fantastic, a good solid story line, the laughs tale off a bit over the last 20 minutes or so, but there's enough going on to keep you watching. Overall a fine effort, great to watch as I'm sure I'll be doing time and time again.

Loved it
The reviewer below obviously missed part of the film, or has gone to see it expecting it to be a diatribe on the nature of God. The film has plenty of laughs for all ages, is very charming (especially Morgan Freeman), and the flood scene at the end is suitably dramatic and instantly makes one realise what the Great Flood of the Old Testament may have been like. Ultimately, an enjoyable film.

Made me laugh and it was clean family fun - not two things I often find together!
I really enjoyed this film. I found it was funny (I preferred it to the original). It also was not at all crude and totally suitable for children. It had good morals about the environment, power, greed etc and had an underlying positive theme re God and the Bible. All in all I don't think I've seen a film that has all these ingredients together which makes it pretty special in my book.

Almighty again
Evan Almighty is the follow up to Bruce Almighty but is a stand alone film and very much different in how it looks and feels overall when compared to Bruce Almighty. Steve Carell playing Evan Baxter as a congressman who is assigned a task by God (Morgan Freeman) to build an ark but with Evan now in a position of power and with a family in a great home will he listen to the command from God or try to ignore him to carry on with his life he has created? This film is simple and funny so if you go into it expecting something that can make you laugh based on situations rather than jokes this film can be enjoyed. The film has been put down by a lot of people but if you just go into it and base it on a stand alone film rather than compare it to Bruce Almighty then you can find something that works.

In diesem Film habe ich öfter mal lachen müssen. Es ist schon schwer vorstellbar, wie Gott das Leben eines Mannes dermaßen durcheinander bringen kann, das dieser sich öfter zum Affen macht vor seinen Mitarbeitern und Vorgesetzten. Aber wenn auch der Anlass ziemlich übertrieben ist für den Bau einer Arche, so hat diese letztlich doch viele Menschenleben und Tiere vor der Flut eines gebrochenen Staudamms erhalten. Nebenbei wurde dann auch noch ENDLICH der kleine Nationalpark eingerichtet und nicht verbaut. Unterhaltsamer Film auf jeden Fall.

Tout va bien sauf que le boitier est sérieusement cassé
Bon film, très intéressant, arrivé bien dans les délais annoncé. Le boitier était sérieusement cassé (dans le transport, vraisemblablement) mais heureusement cela n'a pas affecté le DVD qui est bien lisible.
