amazing piece of kit.
I'm sure that if you're reading this you've already did your research and know specs of this DSLR front to back so I won't bore you with any more. Instead I'll tell you about the things I didn't read about before I bought it. so camera itself is outstanding. I love it and take it everywhere with me. Pictures quality is superb. camera comes with a complete manual but it is in black & white and there's nikon app that has it all in colour anyway so be sure to download that. camera has a built in wifi so no need to buy a remote for it. Just turn wifi on and download nikon app. Wifi also allows you to view your photos on the phone or a tablet. transfer speed is ok. but considering file sizes it's understandable. if you do that. Ale sure you have some spare batteries if you're out and about as this will increase battery consumption. Now the touch screen. Everyone I came across told me that you don't need a touch screen on dslr and it's only a gimmick. true but it's a cool gimmick and also it allows you to interact with yiur camera more freely. Touch screen will allow you to scroll through your gallery, change camera settings. it support pinch to zoom which is handy and also you can pick a point to focus your lens of which is great in some circumstances when auto focus doesn't want to detect exact spot you'd like it to choose. Overall it's a great camera to get into photography. I have only started not long ago but I love it and it's with paying few extra quid for

Magnificent
I haven't owned a DSLR camera for quite a while, but I decided to get back into it. What a camera to go with, especially at the price point. An absolute joy to use, with the touchscreen being more useful than I could have imagined, and sensible controls that mean you get a responsive and highly functional camera. The body is ludicrously light and feels comfortable in the hand, and I can see the fold-out screen being a gem. The pictures are in a word, amazing. Fantastic clarity and depth in a range of lighting conditions, with some nice effects & scenes thrown in to boot. I've only taken one short video so far, but the quality seems superb as well. The only minor issue is the camera-mounted microphones (stereo!) pick up a fair bit of AF noise, but unless you're moving around a lot this won't be a huge issue. I believe Nikon supply some ext microphones as well at a reasonable price. The kit lens it comes with is pretty good, I suppose what you'd expect, but at £10 extra it would be silly not to. Blows all similarly-priced Canon competition out the water (and plays tough with some of the pricier models), and even comes close to matching the D7200, a good £200 more expensive. Even more impressive considering its tiny size. Seriously, this thing is almost pocket sized. I can't recommend this enough to the beginner photographer, gifted amateur, or anybody, for that matter. Five stars.

I was probably expecting too much.
I feel a little reluctant to leave a less than 5 star review on this item because all the other reviewers seem to be extremely happy with the camera., but I have based my review on my experience and have also considered that the unit I had may have been faulty. I have not used a Nikon camera for about 4-5 years with the last one being a Nikon D300S, witch is widely regarded as being about the best crop sensor camera ever made and I think is still available in Nikons current UK line up. I have been a Canon user since then to date, but after I dug out my old D300S and bought a couple of cheap kit lenses to bundle up and give to a friend I was amazed how quite simply superb the latest Nikon VR2 range of lenses are, even the real £50 - £100 budget lenses. So I thought I would try a latest mid range crop sensor Nikon being the D5500. 4 - 5 years of technology improvements in cameras had given me the hope that the D5500 would be on a par with the D300S but I was very wrong. Where pretty much every handheld shot from the D300S was a keeper, those from the D5500 really didn't have the sharpness I was expecting form this model and had troule focussing on the desired subject. I appreciate that no camera maker is ever going to improve its entry level models so much that they are as good as its top line models, but I was expecting more. The camera design is very light and fits in the hand excellently, so the ergonomics are spot on. Video recording performance was disappointing but it is the same with any DLSR be it cheap or expensive, they just are not suited for fast video zooming and direction changes while keeping focus. A cheap Panasonic or Sony camcorder or compact camera will produce much better results and be far easier to control. I have allowed 3 stars based on the fact that I am sure that there must have been a fault with my unit as it was so disappointing and all the other reviewers seem delighted with their cameras. So I have decided to wait and check out the Nikon D500 when it becomes available as this appears to be more in the league I should have been selecting. You shouldn't need to use software to make a photo perfect it should come out of the camera that way.

We love it! Bought this as our anniversary gift
We love it! Bought this as our anniversary gift. It's perfect for beginners, easy to operate and understand the manual that comes with it. It comes with one battery and a few cables. Good photos quality, can be used for selfies. The rotating screen is very handy to take photos of varying angle. And the touchscreen feature is handy when you are in a rush to adjust the settings. The best feature of it was the WiFi feature. It enables us to use it with our tripod, no more unsatisfactory photos or embarrassment asking strangers to help us take photos, as the wifi enables us to take photos when we are ready. But we need to download an app to use that feature to control it via our phone (the app sometimes could be slow, but overall we love this wifi feature and it is satisfactory). It enables me to post our romantic holiday photos on the move! But the wifi feature means that it use the battery more. We had two spare batteries with us during this holiday and that was perfect (in total we have 3 batteries to last us one whole day :morning, afternoon, night). Took it everywhere since we bought it, very lightweight for travelling! Best gift ever!

This is a great piece of kit however you should know that you also need the external microphone for video. This is not mentioned in any of the professional reviews which is misleading and makes you wonder how much money Nikon pays these people. The simple fact is that the auto focus while very good is also very noisy and is picked up on the build in mic, so much so that it ruins any video. So before you buy decide if you also want to spend an extra 100€ for the external mic.

Nikon D5500 is excellent and can easily compare to D610 and D7200 (image quality)
I normally work with D610/D7100 and D800. But I also am a cyclist and try to get as little weight and volume on my bike. Although I had to jump over my shadow (in my head) to actually consider the 5000-Series Nikon as solution I now am very happy I did so. Size (tiny) and weight of this set are really the perfect solution for those days when you don't wish to lug a huge backpack or side bag around with you, go cycling or just wish to always have an camera with you but don't wish to work with a Compact- or Bridge camera. I did experiment with the picture quality before I bought it with my neighbours D5500 and can say, that if you - as I do - mainly work up to the max.print size of A3 you will even as extreme Pixel Counter be very, very hard pushed to see any difference to the D7100 or even the D610. Yes, the D800 gives you a little more resolution, but again - you will have to make mural size prints on an professional printer or be specialised in Macro-Photography/Wildlife/Landscape where you can see the detail. The D5500 is excellent for every day use. For''fast'' and ''lazy'' photography but also for demanding work if you wish to work with it semi manual or manual...even in low light... it's really fun!

Good camera but a grey import
No guarantee card supplied, was a grey import. Had a photocopied manual. Became faulty within a few months. Camera itself was very good. Quality of pics were great. Shame it became faulty and was not a UK model.

Ultra sharp detailed images that far surpass its price tag
Unlike the last reviewer I bought this camera solely for photography and also as a backup camera while my Nikon D800 goes in for a service and sensor cleaning. I never expected it to come close to my D800, but then it is a quarter of the price, however, image quality is fantastic for this price band, there is a noticeable improvement in image sharpness ( especially landscape shots and higher ISO photos ) over the D5300 that my wife currently has, and personally I don't think there's anything better image wise for under £700 at the time of writing this. Anyone that has had Nikon DSLRs will feel at home straight away with the controls, and the addition of the touch screen ( which works really well ) has made accessing certain features easier still. My only gripe, and it is a small one that wouldn't make me lower my five star review, is that the camera feels too light, but then I'm used to lugging around something that is at least twice as heavy. I'll be posting some photos on Flickr shortly, so if you're interested and want to have a look at the results go to my gallery on there and have a nosey https://www.flickr.com/photos/gpearsonimages/
