Do these work on carpet beetles I have them in my chest of draws & wardrobe or are they just for moths?

While moth balls, crystals, and cedar oil, when properly used, will kill clothes moths and carpet beetles, they do not repel these pests. So they are actually of little value before items become infested. Otherwise you can try this: A mixture of white or apple cider vinegar and water can be applied to shelves, drawers, hangers, window sills and cupboards to remove any dirt or food residue. Applying boric acid. Sprinkling this mild insecticide on carpets, rugs and furniture will kill any remaining beetles.

Is it safe to use in a cupboard where we also store packaged food (not open)?

Using in a cupboard with food would NOT be advisable as who knows how good the packaging is and if the active chemical could react with the packaging. There is also a danger that the active ingredient could leach through the packaging.

I use this item as a precaution, and so far have not had any problems with moths damaging my clothes. I believe the product contains a chemical which kills both adult moths and their larvae, so if you already have moths, this product will either kill them or deter them from laying their eggs on your clothes. Moths are attracted to clothes which have been worn, so best to wash or dry clean clothing before putting it away in a wardrobe or drawer.
