How many shoes does each drawer fit in?

Dependant on size or whether boots or shoes,but I have 5 pairs of size 5 in one and 3 pairs of size 9 including garden boots in another.

Can the cushion be machine washed

Yes the cover is removable via a full length zip. I zipped it back up and put it on a 30 degree with other colours and it washed well. I did not tumble dry it because I was unsure of the zip or shrinking.

What is the finish like on the back of the unit, could it be placed in the middle of a room?

I wouldn't put it in the middle of a room but it is white on the back
