Review: A good guide to get the amateur started - a very good general guide to help spot the genuine antique at auctions. It in no way will make you an expert but will serve to point you in the right direction. There is a very good section on china markings which is something that we have not had a lot of experience in but due in part to the large number of them, the section on silver hallmarks is quite small and very limited ( I do note that Judith does have a separate book specialising in these). I would say that this is a worthwhile addition to the collectors library, especially for the beginner, as it will not bog you down in information. and you are able to become familiar with a specific field with some ease due to the clarity of text and multitude of photographic examples. Review: Great for the beginner who wants to learn to appraise commonly found items. - I bought this for my wife for Christmas. She loves routing around at carboots and wanted top learn a bit more. She has read this book from cover to cover and made notes in the little book she carries around with her from it. It is by no means comprehensive but covers the most likely items, marks and condition reports you are likely to find. There are many illustrations and instructions on how to read and find makers marks etc. This is a great book for beginners or the curious person who wants to find out the basics. For experienced antique hunters you probably know most of the content by now so it won't be much use to you.

Nice general antiques book
Bought this for the better half and he loves it. It does not go in to great detail about items but it gives you a good idea what they are worth. A good companion book for referencing, but if you need a vast amount of detail this isn't the book for you. Well presented, well thought out, well laid out, swift delivery and the boyfriend loves it .

Very useful
Although not absolutely comprehensive (it would have to be a massive set of books if it were), this is great for teaching you what to look for when examining antiques. It helps you get your eye in and you'll soon be able to sort the wheat from the chaff before even picking things up. Antiques have a certain look about them and reproductions don't, this book will help you see the difference.

Antiques Detective Analysis
Antiques Detective: Tips and tricks to make you the expert Quite informative for the beginner. Section on 'copies' is good. Could benefit from an updated version with links to relevant websites. Overall good read on the way to understand antiques. Good images, which promote quick recognition when scanning the internet.

Excellent for beginners
Packed with useful information for the amateur antique dealer. Full of tips on how to identify pieces in the photofit section at the back. It also gives some useful information on identifying fakes. If you are starting off in the antique trading business this is THE book to start with. Packaging and delivery time both excellent.

An interesting insight into spotting a fake and the real thing.
I've not seen a book on antiques like this before, came across it by chance. It is very interesting and I will used when looking at antiques for myself.

Useful
I found this book useful and informative to a degree. You're not going to get super amazing things out of this book, but if you're really new or only slightly experienced, there is something here for you. It never hurts to add to your reading collection.

Trucs et astuces l'œil du chineur en anglais !
Très contente d'avoir trouvé la Version anglaise de l'œil du chineur, trucs et astuces sachant que la version française ne se fait plus et que les occasions sont hors de prix.

antique investigator
This book was selected as a Christmas present to help a young couple learn to look and notice important details in older objects. The techniques would be helpful to anybody regardless of experience with antiques.. We were so impressed with the content as we thumbed through that we then bought a copy for ourselves
