Do your binoculars have a strong chemical smell?

YES they have a strong industrial rubber type smell to them

I just got these and I’m really struggling to fold down the rims to use them with glasses. Any tips??

What do you mean fold down the rims? You can expand and reduce the width of the lenses /eye pieces. Just follow the instructions. For information the zoom is the dial in the middle so the other answer was incorrect.

Are these suitable for safari?

I have not been on safari so could not say. They are compact and good for seeing quite far. It depends what you want them to do.

What is the closest distance you can focus these binoculars to be able to watch birds with these?

I have found that they focus very easily from about 5mtrs out to approx a kilometer. Super little bino's
