Winsor & Newton - Watercolour Paint - Watercolour Paint Sets - Winsor and Newton - Cotman Watercolour - 45 Half Pan Studio Set

I bought two of these on a Prime Day sale for €42 each which was an amazing price to get them for. This is a great pallet of watercolours, so pigmented and easy to use. This painting is just a really quick example of how they worked for me. I just paint as a hobby these days and these are as professional a pallet as I need them to be. Yes the case is plastic and yes it can be difficult to open but with patience it opens fine. I love these paints and happily recommend them to beginners and professionals alike.

After seeing an artist at the Northamptonshire September 2025 'NROS' festival using these paints I took interest in them. They looked amazing on paper with good colour strength and held well on a brush also the fact the tin folded out from its compact carry size is ideal for taking them out with you. So thought I'll have a look online and they are being sold still for 50 - 60 pounds online and in uk art supply shops so was put off a little. Then i saw them at the crazy price of £24 in the Amazon sales thats over 60 percent off i couldn't not get them at that price. They come in a lovely compact tin with the logo on and have the slots the half pans are in that can fold open to accommodate replacement pans ( I assume any brand half watercolour standard pan will fit . ) Also a clever slot down the middle that will take a pencil and or a brush ! I know from owning previous Winsor & Newton art materials they are a good brand . At the stage of my art ability the Cotman range is more than sufficient aimed at students & a intermediate skill group they're not a beginners set which gives confidence :)

Arrived when expected and seems very good. I already own a small field set of these Cotman watercolour paints so I knew what to expect but having recently joined an art group I thought I might need more colours and I think I'll certainly be spoilt for choice with this selection. Five of the most used colours are duplicates which is handy, however, once you remove those (which I put away for safe keeping) there is quite a bit of space and the paints are, as others have said, loose in the slots and move about a bit more than I'd like. As recommended by others, though, it was fairly easy to secure them with a tiny blob of Blutac and I think that should suffice to hold them in place. Some people have said that the box is difficult to open but if you slide a fingernail into the crack and give it a slight flick, it actually opens quite easily. Once open with the two trays extended, it did look a little large to take to a class, but then I found that the front mixing tray is removable which made it perfect. All in all I'm very happy with my purchase - and it was an extremely good price as well. Definitely recommended.

AMAZING really pigmented colours. Bright and beautiful

Six months ago I was looking for a metal tin with empty half pans. I added the empty Meeden box and empty half pans to my cart, but suddenly saw this WN Metal Box with 24 Cotman half pans for the same price as the empty Meeden box. This was a no brainer: for £11 I bought the WN box and a few days later bought another 2. I was already familiar with Cotman so I knew what to expect. The Cotman line is student quality. I have outgrown the Cotman now, but it is fine for beginners and intermediate painters. I am now using these for my sketchbook and other doodles. Some colours don't rewet very well but it helps a lot if you spray the paints with water a few minutes before use. The colour selection in this box is very versatile and is a standard selection. Usually the Cotman paints come in a plastic box or a blue metal tin. This black metal tin is the same as the one that comes with the professional line. It gives a luxurious feel, much more so than a plastic box does. The WN logo is printed on the outside of the lid. It has a ring at the bottom of the box. The inside is sprayed white. There are no sharp edges, all edges are rolled. Resting the box in my hand with one finger in the ring feels very stable and comfortable. I've used this box almost daily and have often carried it in my bag. I made a protective cotton sleeve for it. Apart from the odd dent and scratch the box is still as new. The hinges are as new and the box opens and closes as it should be. To summarize it was a great buy!

These watercolours are the best I’ve ever used! The pigment is amazing and the colour range is so good. I would definitely say suitable for beginners as I’m not that experienced myself but find them easy to use.

It’s really great and vibrant; the case is a bit annoying to open, but other than that, it’s great.

If you want to try your hand at watercolour but don't want to invest in professional sets yet, I think you can't go wrong with this set. There is a decent colour range that is not overwhelming in the sheer number of colours, yet there is more than the usual split primary colours. Almost all the colours were easy to work with save for Viridian. I found that I was often fighting with this specific colour to get it to do what I wanted, and now I usually avoid it unless I'm just using it as a background wash. However, I am a complete beginner in watercolour, so it could very well be a user error (so take this con with a grain of salt). The cover of the lid serves as a palette with 6 wells that can be used to mix colours, which was really useful. Also, since I'm quite clumsy, I've dropped this set multiple times on the floor. Though the set itself is sturdy in that it won't break easily, the individual pans will pop out. I ended up putting a dollop of superglue on the back of the pans so that they wouldn't pop out or move around as easily anymore. TLDR; Great set, proud of many of the paintings I did with it

Student quality compact set that will be great for travelling with or as a starter set for a studio. Good colour range and layout. The travel brush is good for a start but you'll want to buy a larger one for your washes.

Very pigmented. Way better than my cheaper set
