Secret Garden: An Inky Treasure Hunt and Colouring Book: 1 - Cover May Vary

The level of detail & scale was a bit of a shock! Not sure I've managed to break out the 4mm nib felt pens - firmly stuck with 1mm fine liners! Pencil crayons also work well. Wax crayons or thick felt tips - nope! The vast majority of the book is very very small scale intricate shapes - not for someone who struggles to stay inside the lines or has poor eyesight/ poor light (I will be buying a magnifying glass, my eyes are too old for the tiniest scale bits). That said, there's a couple of pages which are large scale. And I really like that some themes are developed from small scale to bigger scale (like the fish in the pond, there's a very symmetrical detailed bird's eye view one with lots of fish, opposite an underwater with 2 large fish page). I like the contrast, it makes it all feel very fresh even after you've coloured them in. There's a Key to all the different little elements like insects & keys & treasure chest etc at the front telling you how many of each in the whole book and a Key at the back telling you how many of each element are in specfic pages. I particularly like that there's a few mazes to colour in, and also designs where there's a fully drawn bit that dwindles down to suggest where you might like to draw your own version in the huge blank spaces. The book works just as well if you only colour in what's there because the design placing is very well done. The whole book is beautifully thought out and the paper has a really nice feel to it - which has left me a bit confused because with the fine liners it's almost like blotting paper - taking everything else into account, I'm really surprised you get show through from one side to the other (all pages are double sided with designs). If I hold the pen down that little bit too long, the paper sucks the ink up. There's an enormous number of pages in there, superb value for money, but the designs are SO good that if it really bothered me that it leaked through, I wouldn't be able to choose which to do and would have to buy 2 books! I love the white card dust cover that is printed both sides - extra space to colour is always a bonus! The inner design is larger scale that the outer design. You could also colour the outside of the brown cover (with monochrome). All in all probably the most exciting & fun colouring book I've ever seen. Really it gets 6 stars!

Good adult colouring book. I feel its detail to be to small for children to colour but Its really nice quality and encouraged creativity

I received this colouring book for Christmas after adding it to my Amazon Wishlist and I absolutely love it! The book is filled with many beautiful designs, so pretty that I didn't know which one to colour in first. Every page will keep you occupied for ages as the designs are very intricate and detailed...I can recommend sharpening your pencils as there are some really teeny tiny bits. I've read reviews saying that the paper quality is poor which I don't quite agree with. It's not ultra-thin or flimsy but slightly textured and a warm shade of off-white. I wouldn't dream of using felt tips on it though as it feels like it would soak the pigment up and show on the other side and that would be such a shame. This is why I chose to use my coloured pencils instead. Someone else mentioned that this book is only suitable for "young children to 'scribble' in". Totally prepostorous! I'm 39 and thoroughly enjoy colouring these designs and have already bought this book for my 19 year old daughter and a 12 year old girl. I don't recommend it for young children to scribble in at all. Well worth the money considering how long it will last you.

This beutiful book had a gasp from me on every page! It is simply amazing. I bought this book because I love colouring but wanted something more grown up and artistic, this was the book for me! It also has many pages where you can add to the designs, so you get to draw as well, and a cute treasure hunt throughout. I couldn't believe just how many designs there are - even the nameplate and inside of the dust jacket are covered in lovely swirly flowers for you to colour! The only thing I don't like about this book is the paper quality, although decent I feel as though a book designed for colouring in such detail should really be made with super heavy-duty paper so that pens don't bleed through. My fine tipped felt pens bleed through slightly so I will probably use pencils for designs that have other pictures on the reverse side. DO A PEN TEST ON A PAGE AT THE BACK! - I know I would have been so upset to find I ruined a design by my pens bleeding through!! Be warned - this is not the book for you if you struggle with your close up vision, the designs are so intricate, so spaces that need colouring are no more than a 0.5mm across! Thank you to the illustrater for a beautiful book that will provide months and months ( if not years ) of pleasure for me.

I ordered two Johanna Brasford books, both the English version. But one has white and thicker pages, this one had yellow and quite thin pages. I don't understand why there's a difference. But I'm sending the yellow one back. 🙃 The illustrations are beautiful though.

Beautiful floral designs on each page. (This didn’t come with colouring pencils- description needs to be changed)

This is another excellent colouring book by very talented Johanna Basford. I’m not so keen on the half illustrated pages that she leaves in this book for us to add our own drawings to colour. There aren’t many so it doesn’t matter too much. I like her different scenes & there are floral designs. It was a good price through Amazon compared with her Worlds of Wonder, also an excellent colouring book.
