Great value
I had a stand alone turntable, which originally was part of a music centre. After the original system developed a fault, I brought a newer, second hand one, to plug the turntable into. However, the sound was very quiet, and after reading up, discovered I may need a pre amp. Not wanting to spend too much, just in case, I sent for this. Hey presto, it works a treat, with a great sound. So far, so good.

Cheap and cheerful
It was cheap and works. If I'd have given it any thought I might have gone for something a little more expensive. I wasn't 100% sure a pre-amp would solve the problem I had with a change of turntable so went for the cheapest option. It did solve the low volume issue very well. But as with many other reviews on here, there was a humming noise when switched on. Doesn't affect the sound quality when records are playing so it's not that much of a problem. So much so, I'll not bother buying another any time soon. I'm very happy with it. Mains or battery powered. I've inserted a battery now. Works great

Cheap and cheerful but does the job, sort of, with a bit of modification.
I knew I was buying a pre-amp for my turntable, so was not surprised with this product. Small, compact and easy to use. It could use a PP3 9V battery or the mains adapter. I went for the battery (because I had one!) and because I now pre-amps are very noise sensitive. Which brings me onto my next subject - the hum and the buzz! The pre-amp box has no means of connecting a 'ground', 'earth' or '0V' connection; and sure does it need one!! I found a screw at the end I thought was for that reason, but does nothing because it screws into plastic. I tried grounding the metal case, but did naff all, so it's 'floating' (not grounded itself). If I used a ground wire to the phono 0V connection, hey presto, hum/buzz gone, but no way of making it a permanent hardwire connection. I plan to get my soldering iron out, drill a hole into the metal case and make a common ground for all. I will let you know how I get on!

Potential for excellent high fidelity RIAA compensation
We got an old Gemini TT03 turntable & a StudioMaster 162 BPX mixer, and a nice cartridge... we learned that in order to get any Bass response we also needed a preamp that does RIAA compensation. Our mixer had no phono inputs, only line level and mic level. This av-link STP-2 despite the low cost really does complete the setup and give us impressive studio-quality sound. It is a stereo preamp with RIAA compensation. Many people do notice that a 3.5 mm phone jack for the power supply is not a good choice (it will momentarily short the supply unless you remember to plug it into the unit before you plug it into the wall), and even using the internal 9V battery, we needed to be sure to connect the turntable ground wire to the ground band of the input, to eliminate 60 cycle hum. But it IS possible to do that, and once you overcome the limitations of the power supply (other reviews say it inject a bit of its own 60 cycle noise unless the grounding is excellent), anyway, once you are sure that the grounding is right, you end up with a very valuable and good quality sound system.

Cheap and Nasty...
I guess you get what you paid for... But the total lack of support for grounding is astonishing, and borderline dangerous. The unit hums like a buzzsaw, and renders it almost unusable. But it's cheap... So I guess, the old rule applies here as well. YOU GET WHAT YOU PAID FOR... Anyway, if you look for a quick way to revive your old TT, just walk a few more miles and leave that unit at arm's length at all time. It's a waste of money...

Gets a buzzing noise in background
Technics turntable used but this is making a low buzz/humm in the background when used with my bose theatre system via RCA input sockets Shame, worse when at high volume

AV Link Low Noise Preamp
I built this preamp into an Ariston 1200 turntable plinth with a Stanton and also a Goldring cartridge. The preamp is designed to raise the few millivolts of such (hi–fi) cartridges by about 40db or 100 times to match the line input of an amplifier. It also has the necessary RIAA frequency response to compensate for such cartridges. The metal case must be earthed via the screw in order to prevent extraneous hum pick–up. If it were to be connected to the input or supply permanently there could be the possibility, in some cases, of introducing an earth loop. The preamp seems to be very low noise and hum and works very well, is small cheap and saved me the bother of making one. JPM
