Will this help me play bar chords??? Specifically my index finger across all strings - can't seem to get all the strings pressed down to play a bar

Yes, and no. This will help build up the strength needed to maintain a barre but that's nothing that constant practice won't help with. This excels for individual finger strength, use this to get your pinky leveled up.

Will this help with piano playing as well?

That's partly what I bought it for. Finger strength is always good, but I'm not convinced it's a major help (I suspect that 15 minutes a day of classic strenghtening exercises such Hannon would be more benifical). The main problem with it is that it drives the family mental as I sit there squeezing it while we're watching a DVD :)

Is this useful for violin players?

It will help with all stringed instruments. I appreciate the neck on a violin is thinner, however it is the same muscles used.

How does it compare with the gripmaster pro and sportgrip?

Sorry cant compare but it is very effective for arthritic hands
