Why is it that the darker shades are more expensive ?

Good observation and it's normally down to demand and profit. If will can't locate it instore as is mostly the case due to limited darker shades instore your next route is online. But If you go online you will find the full shade range but darker shades depending on the Retailer may sell for more. Superdrug and Boots will always charge the same for their products.
