If we have a lot of Legos, and kids with imagination to build things, what would I need to purchase aside from this box (and maybe RC and receiver)?

There is a book for Lego technique that gives ideas to kids to build things. I myself purchased this to make Lego Tech 42006 excavatar a powered and remote controlled. There are numerous sets that can be purchased that use the power functions. Check out legoCom for other sets.

Does this work on non-technic Lego items?

You can use regular bricks to attach to, or build around, the motor. You will however need Lego technic pieces to take full advantage of it (eg. gears, cogs, shafts, etc.)

Is there a companion set of axles, wheels, and perforated beams? This looks a little short of doing anything useful with non-Technic Lego sets.

There are sets like the LEGO 42006 Excavator and LEGO 9396 Helicopter that use this set as a motorized upgrade. I assume most who purchase this set already have a large LEGO collection that includes Technic. Theoretically, any of the LEGO Technic sets could be used with the LEGO 8293 set. I would also suggest finding a Technic MIX of parts to build with. Some kids, like mine, get a new set and build their own creations without ever building the intended model...

What remote do i need to get to control this?

You might see its like the size of a play station remote expect its lego😄
