Can this be used in a short /medium beard without the use of oil. As in is it ok for skin without oil first

Would be fine to use for short to medium beard, would advise to use less balm and not combine with oil, it's not needed to use both at the same time.

Does this product contain alcohol(ethanol) ?

Imagine more of a soft chapstick, that when you rub between your palms, turns into an oil. 
I use this instead of beard Oil, it’s just in a tin not a tub. 
Can’t really use it to ‘style’ the beard in my opinion, but I think they do one with more of a waxy finish for that

On opening the tin the product is very soft and looks gritty (but when applied it seems ok) there is a warning about it being liquefied, on the tin?

This can happen when the balm has been exposed to a source of heat similarly like butter. During our recent hot Summer my tin of balm resembled yours being kept in my bathroom cabinet. It doesn't affect the quality, scent or effectiveness of the balm so please don't be concerned. Keep it in the fridge to maintain its consistency. I have been using Honest Amish beard products for several years and it is the best in my opinion because the effect on my beard has been remarkable.
