Question 1

Is this set for european or US type of locks?

Accepted Answer

The PXS-14 was primarily designed for US locks, although it will work with many UK locks. The C range of Southord picks are better suited to UK locks as they are a little slimmer. The C1500 would be the UK equivalent to the PXS-14. Having said this - the PXS-14 still remains the most popular set sold in the UK.

Question 2

Is this set enough to practice on this pair of Southord transparent locks? http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ICYG168/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8

Accepted Answer

This set is more than enough to practice with, I just did not think the case was up to Southord standards. I only ever use 3 picks out of the set. Happy Picking.

Question 3

Can you pick wafer type locks with this bit of kit

Accepted Answer

Should be OK for single sided wafer locks but for double sided you really need double sided picks and a two point tension tool. There is a 24 piece GOSO set available from Amazon at a similar price to this Southord set. The GOSO set has a range of 2 sided picks and a two point tension tool. You may want to consider that as an alternative.

Question 4

What type of metal is this? Are those holes in the bottom, or just depressions? (photo a bit unclear--looking to put them on a ring). Thanks!

Accepted Answer

The picks themselves are steel and about 14 CM long. Too long to put on a ring I would think. The handle ends are plain. No holes or indents and there is a separate pack of neat plastic handles that you can fit yourself. I heated them in water before fitting and they slid on neatly. I found them to be a good basic set with a useful selection of picks and rakes. In some narrow keyways the similarly priced GOSO are easier to manoeuver.
