It will rappidly become your go to tool
Excellent tool, well made and easy to use. After unwrapping at my work top I was using it within minutes on a 1:24 kit where it removed filler and reopened panel lines easily. I then tried it on a 1:72 and a 1:48 kit that were both part finished. I was impressed that the blade was able to cope well with the different scales and sizes of line. After two days this has become an essential piece of my kit.

Not a great panel line maker
The knife is of good quality. Its well made, quite tough and robust. The blade is a good width, not prone to bending and should last. The retracting mechanism is manual and the lock is manual also, but all works perfectly and smoothly. There is nifty storage in the handle for spare blades and this knife comes with one spare blade in the handle. I guess it depends on what you want it for as to whether it is any good. For me, I got this on recommendation that it would score (and remove) a thin groove of plastic from plastic model kits and thereby inscribe panel lines in my models. What this does can be replicated by a simple box knife or Stanley knife. It effectively just cuts a line in the styrene leaving a raised ridge - not what I wanted. If you are after something to make these marks or cut break lines in plastic sheets then a Stanley knife is just as good and probably easier to wield with force. That said, this is great for gouging out any filler that I leave in existing panel lines. The shape of the blade cleans out the existing line perfectly. As such, it is still a useful tool for me and is making light work of the hundreds of lines to clean up.

Excellent purchase, highly recommended for cutting perspex and similar plastics
I recently bought some perspex sheeting for various projects around the house. I have not worked with perspex before so I searched online for the recommended ways to cut it. I had been thinking of using a jig-saw, but uncertain how clean or straight a line I could achieve. I saw this and ordered one. I have used it to cut sheets of thicknesses from 2mm to 5mm, and had no trouble at all. I scribe a deep groove and "snap" off the waste over the edge of a table or worktop. So far I have 100% success. It is easy to scribe repeatedly over the same line to achive the depth of groove that you want. I suppose I might have been able to achieve similar results with a stanley knife or similar modelling knife and a brand-new blade, but I am not sure. This scriber is easy to hold firmly - not too big or too small, and I find it sits comfortably in the hand. The blade slides out and back in again, and is locked in place with a simple screw mechanism, so no chance of it moving while it is being used (unlike some Stanley knives and modelling knives). The blade is thin, but rigid, and nice and sharp. The size and shape of the blade mean that it is a very effective cutter and does not flex as you use it - this is very important for scribing lines and repeating the same line. There are two spare blades safely stored in the handle, and held in place so that they do noit rattle around and dull their edge.

Tamiya Quality
It's Tamiya! I could just leave it as that for those who know that firm's reputation for excellent products. Whilst other tools can be used as a hack or a bodge for scale model scribing this is a dedicated piece of kit and does a fine job. A bit pricey, but you won't need to buy it again.

A little awkward if you're left handed!
This is one of those miracle model makers tools I'd heard so much about and finally decided I needed. Previously I used a self-modified Stanley knife hook blade with cutting angle ground to work as a scribe/cutter but it's a bit big & clunky although excellent for large work like acrylic/perspex glazing. This Tamiya Olfa cutter works okay but I found the thumb wheel clamping the blade too readily collided with my right hand holding my straight edge guide down - I'm left-handed you see. I can only use it if the straight edge is wide enough to grip clear of that thumb wheel. I took out one of the spare blades and found it fitted in one of my old craft knife handles with a collet-type blade grip. This works much better for me with more clearance to work.

Excellent tool
This tool is great for scribing plastic sheet and for doing panel lines on any model. I've used it loads and you get spare blades. It us very well made and well worth having.

If you are into scribing
I have tried other scribing tools and I was not happy with the process. I watched modelers on YouTube using this scriber and having great results, so I decided to give this a try. It is VERY sharp. Best results are obtained with minimum pressure. When I used it, I start by saying to myself, don't press too much and then, while scribing, keep on saying this to myself. It gives out a perfect line and can follow along raised panel lines without a guide (with very little pressure). The first two passes need to be ultra-light in pressure, after that the blade stays in the groove without a problem.

This is one of those tools that once you finally get it and use it, you immediately ask yourself, “How did I live without this all these years?” The Tamiya Plastic Scriber II works exactly as it should. It cuts clean panel lines and grooves in plastic with very little effort, and the control is excellent. The blade shape makes it easy to follow existing lines or create new ones without the tool wandering. The handle is comfortable, the blades are sharp, and the whole tool feels well made. If you build plastic models or do any kind of detailing work, this tool quickly becomes something you reach for all the time. Absolutely a fantastic scriber. Easy 5+ stars.
