does this work with 2019 MacBook Air?

It should work, I am using Mac book pro 2019 model. I am using it on daily basis and it works great.

Has anyone else had issues with this hub causing the wifi to drop?

I was having the exact same problem, as soon as I plugged in the adapter my WiFi I would drop. Apparently it is a known issue with Apple and adapters. There is a YouTube video that gives a simple fix of wrapping aluminum foil around the cord of the adapter. The fix works but I was not happy with using aluminum foil after paying as much as I did for my new MacBook Pro. I spent over an hour on the phone with Apple support and after doing several resets the NVRAM reset worked.

Is this compatible with the MacBook Air?

If the air is a newer model with usb type c.

did you have to do anything special to make the tv recognize the hdmi through the adapter?

Just plug and play and sellect the right hdmi port as output by your tv remote control.
