The photos in this edition are black and white. Make your new Hemi powerplant even faster and more responsive with guidance from Mopar expert and veteran author Larry Shepard. This third-generation Hemi carries on a high-performance Chrysler tradition and is considered the most powerful and "buildable" new pushrod V-8 engine on the market today. In New Hemi Engines 2003 to Present: How to Build Max Performance , Larry reveals up-to-date modification techniques and products for achieving higher performance. Porting and modifying the stock Hemi heads as well as the best flow characteristics with high lift are revealed. In addition, guidance on aftermarket heads is provided. The New Hemi engine has an aggressive persona and outstanding performance. Powering the Challenger, Charger, Ram trucks, and other vehicles in the Chrysler lineup, this engine produces at least one horsepower per cubic inch. Unleashed in 2003, it has been offered in 5.7-, 6.1-, 6.2-, and now 6.4-liter displacements. With each successive engine introduction, Chrysler has extracted more performance. And with the launch of the Hellcat and Demon 6.2-liter supercharged engines, Chrysler built the highest horsepower production engines ever made, at 707 hp and 840 hp respectively. A supercharger is one of the most cost-effective aftermarket add-ons, and the options and installation are comprehensively covered. Shepard guides you through the art and science of selecting a cam, so you find a cam that meets your airflow needs and performance goals. He details stock and forged crankshafts plus H- and I-beam connecting rods that support the targeted horsepower, so you can choose the best rotating assembly for your engine. In addition, intake manifold and fuel systems, ignition systems, exhaust systems, and more are covered. Review: Great technical data. - This book has a lot of nice reference material in it. COULD BE A LOT BETTER
Overall, the book is just okay. I think its a good introduction, but that is all. It does not go deep into relevant theory and principles of an SI Engine, or what differentiates Hemis from other engines (Chrysler, or otherwise). For example, I found several glaring mistakes, omissions and discrepancies in the text concerning the history of the Gen 3 Hemi, and Hemis in general. Were the omissions intentional? Possibly, and this due to the rarity of the 426 Street Hemis (Gen 2, as they are now called) and prior. As for me. I had two 426 Hemis when I was younger; one in a 1968 RR and another in a Super Bee (originally a 383 car). And, I transplanted a 392 (what folk call a Gen 1 Hemi, these days) into a 1970 Dart. Granted, the headers gave me a turning radius of a Knuckle Head with Gorilla Hangers and a six foot Fork, but it was worth the time and effort. So perhaps now you can see why I am a little concerned about the mistakes, discrepancies, and missing information in this book. Mistakes and missing info costs money. Beyond this, the book is actually useful in that it is a notebook of sorts. It tracks down all of the current part numbers, and odds and ends that you would need to tear down, inspect, and rebuild your Gen 3 Hemi. There is nothing really performance-oriented in this book, beyond directing you to this or that company and web address. Ultimately, this book will require a shop manual to actually tear down, inspect, and rebuild the engines that are discussed in the text. Would it be a book I recommend to the novice who has never rebuilt an engine and does not own many tools? If this is you, and you want to rebuild that Hemi in your car/truck/Jeep, then I would say "No". This is not a book for the beginner of that sort. But if you have training, or some practical experience in building custom engines, then yes. You will find this book to be a great reference, and source of foundational information. On a final note. If your experience is limited to 4- and 6-bangers, or wedge engines, or any sort of foreign auto with what sounds like a blender under the hood that is attached at the other end to some obnoxious "fart can" muffler, then please listen to me and go find someone who has experience in building Hemis. Learn from them, first. Hemis are strange creatures. They have their own set of rules. You can't build them like a wedge engine, be it an LS or something else.

Hard to follow if you don't have much experience with engines
Reading this is like listening to a conversation between two people of the same vocation (that you don't share). Things and explanations are left out or brushed over because it's assumed you know. It's not a bad book but it's not the foundational learning experience that I expected. For that there are too many "plot holes" in this book.

Excellent manual!
It is simply a matter of the fact that my $10,000 plus motor is extremely happy with this incredible book! A perfect piece of mind for the home building expert or home garage mechanic!

perhaps the title is a little ambitious ...
Bought because it is difficult to obtain tech 'details' of the 6.1 hemi, here in the UK. It does help filling in the blanks, but its not like Haynes manuals used to be ...
