The documented sealing length for this is 200mm which is less than that on the 12" (FS-300) version (300mm). Is this a typo or actually true?

No 12" sounds about right, it does a great job once you figure out the correct heat settings.recommend

Will this reseal the Amazon Prime shipping envelopes we get for returns to Amazon?

Yes if they're the same type of bags they ship items to us with. I've resealed their bags to send back items to them.

I bought this sealer over three months ago and is still working nicely, however I was wondering if I could use a thicker heat element?

No a thicker element would pull more power and blow the fuse if you want a thicker element you have to buy one triple the cost. I just double seal

Can you use this on Mylar balloons?

Don't see why not all it does is heat and melt plastics. I would do a little research into what exactly what MYLAR IS MADE OF. You can adjust the heating range
