Review: A good quality product - Bought it as a gift person loved it Review: Wonderful for diehard Dirty Dancing fans - I have loved this movie since I was 10 years old. I've owned it on VHS, on DVD, and now this beautiful Blue Ray edition. The "feelies" in the Collector's Edition are nice; I like the map/brochure of the resort, and the mock shooting script was a fascinating read. I loved seeing the "emotive"/motivational tips in the story, and now I finally know how old Johnny was supposed to be in relation to Baby! The script includes most of the deleted scenes, and some other information that didn't make it verbatem into the final cut. The "I carried a watermelon" wristlet seems fairly sturdy, but with some fraying on the cut/unfinished edges inside. As cute as it is, I probably won't use it, instead keeping it with the rest of the box. The same for the Kellerman's keychain and the compact. The "vintage" postcards are nice, and all the printed feelies are very high quality. As for the movie itself, I've only watched the Blue Ray disc, not the DVD or the digital copy. The print is MUCH cleaner than the 10-year anniversary DVD I have, which looked like it was transferred from an old VHS. There's still a slight grainy quality to the picture, but the colors have been sharpened (some of the clothing and graphics which looked pink on my DVD are now a much more vibrant red) and the audio is crisp and clear. I have some issues with the closed captions; there are some passages that I know are wrong, some lines that are shortened or condensed (which leave out some of the context of the original lines), and I don't like that they don't at least acknowledge the music cues, as the soundtrack is almost a character in itself. Even a simple "(Big Girls Don't Cry playing in background)" would enhance the captions. I did just use the English subtitle track; maybe the other one is better. I love all the extended/deleted/alternate scenes included, and the "Happy Birthday, Dirty Dancing" featurette is wonderful, covering the original movie, the stage show, and the upcoming television movie. We saw a truncated version of this feature when we went to the Fathom Events screening, and there's a bit in there that just made me sob happy tears. Overall, this is an amazing anniversary collection. The restoration of the film is beautiful, the shooting script adds so much more nuance to the story, and the feelies add just a beautiful look into the past.

This is the Time of ANYONE'S Life!
As other reviewers have said, this movie is timeless. It was made when I was about 5 years old but when I first saw it at the age of 16 I fell in love! And no, not over Patrick Swayze's six pack and pecks (although they are added bonuses!) but over the heart and humanity of the story. The story takes place in the summer of 1963 "Before President Kennedy was shot, before the Beatles came" as Baby, the heroine, says. She and her Mom, Dad and sister are on their way to a family vacation spot. Baby is sort of a wallflower, she has her own ideas and ambitions but no spark to her life. Then, she sees Johnny Castle, a tall, rebellious dance instructor. When Penny, Johnny's dance partner, finds out she's pregnant and decides to get an illegal abortion, Baby becomes involved in the struggles of the teens and twenty-somethings barely making a living among the "elite". Baby then makes a deal to learn how to dance so that both Johnny and Penny can keep their jobs. I love these scenes when she and Johnny are arguing over the dance steps. The scene with "Hungry Eyes" is one of my favorites! In the course of this, we see Baby's evolution from dowdy clothing to great clothes and makeup! And once she shows some spirit, the story really begins. Johnny learns to respect her and she sees the true person hidden behind the tough exterior. Of course, there has to be conflict. When Penny's abortion threatens her life, Baby again saves the day by bringing her doctor father in to save her. Johnny takes the wrap for the pregnancy and at the same time, Baby makes a bold move! Penny's pregnancy and Baby's automatic assumption that the child is Johnny's is typical of the wealthy's view of people considered "low" class. The fact that it is Robbie's, the med. student waiter, shows the truth of life. Appearances are deceiving. This movie is a lesson for anyone willing to automatically lean on stereotypes. Baby's Dad was sure Johnny was the bad guy and was all ready for Lisa (his other daughter) to marry Robbie! If I say any more, I will give away the whole plot. But believe me, it only gets better and better! Dirty Dancing is all about having fun, giving people a chance, not falling in to stereotypes and not being afraid to fall in love! This rings true for any generation. This movie is a MUST WATCH for anyone!

See it again, notice more details and enjoy
You have probably seen it, but have you seen it recently ? There are many details to absorb, with a fast moving although predictable plot. Nevertheless, various nuances appear each time I watch this movie. First of all, you will have to suspend your disbelief. Would even a wealthy father like Dr Houseman give his daughter hundreds of dollars without knowing what it was for, the equivalent of thousands today? Would a young woman like Baby be able to sneak around with Johnny in a small resort like that, full of busybodies, and keep it a secret for more than 24 hours? Apparently as others have written, there are some anachronisms in the film. To me, they were not glaring. Baby's mohair sweaters convinced me we were definitely in a different era. The activity list alone, was enough to set me in the past. Dance lessons, charades, bingo, arts and crafts, yawn.....and where is the booze in this movie? Alcohol is curiously absent, for a group of semi rowdy young adults. But I digress.. The universal emotional tug of this movie is that it will remind you of something, or someone. Most likely your own coming of age story. Which probably didn't happen in the Catskills, or at a summer resort. But it doesn't matter, because everyone has a season where they discover not just themselves, but also some fundamental truths about life. That people and things are often not what they seem. That life requires embracing tough ambiguities. So suspend your disbelief, ignore the inconsistencies and enjoy the steam, the dancing and the music. Most young people have a season, often a summer, where life's mysteries are suddenly thrust upon them and innocence is lost. This is the story of "Baby" Houseman growing up the summer before she starts college. While she loses her virginity, there is more to the story than that. She also learns that everything she has ever been taught is subject to scrutiny and often wrong. This movie will bring back memories even if you never vacationed in the Catskills with your parents. Dirty Dancing manages to weave several universal coming of age themes into an almost believable story. Plus some really cool looking dancing. Swayze and Grey are both about 10 years older than the characters they portray, but they pull it off and their chemistry sizzles. Great music, too, both the oldies featured and the soundtrack written for the film. I know there are people that have seen this movie thousands of times. While I wouldn't do that, I did enjoy picking up on some small details that I never noticed before. Like leaves falling pretty furiously in the background in one scene. The movie was shot in the early fall and some leaves had to be spray painted green, as well. Probably the theme that resonates with me the most is the dawning of Baby's moral understanding. She has been taught to think in terms of black and white, good vs evil, however many people are not exactly what they seem and there are a lot of incongruities in life. 5 stars for the memories. It is not great cinema, but great to watch again, even if you have seen it several times. Even if you didn't experience anything exactly like this, you will still remember your youth.

DVD stopped working for no reason.
I disliked it because it stopped working. Won't play, player doesn't recognize it, neither does the PC. All other DVDs still work in my player and PC, just this DVD gives me an absurd error. Strange. Really frustrated.
