Optimal ingredients, unlike most grain-free hype brands
I’ve searched years for this kind of food. As an engineer with experience in biology I took a great interest in learning feline nutrition so I could make sure her body has the right stuff that she needs in it. It isn’t about the buzzwords “wild ancestry” nor “live long foodbits 3000 TM” because those aren’t actually meaningful—I want to know which molecules should be in her food and body. Everything dies sooner in nature than when we do our best. They also die sooner when we feed them McDonalds every day. I want to feed my cat analogous to how a nutritionist would tell me to eat, so I decided to become her nutritionist. I’ve had my cat since I was 8 years old. I’m now 22 and she is 14. I’m committed to keeping her here with me and happy for as long as felinely possible. This is everything I’ve been looking for in a cat food for my 14 year old baby. Over 50% protein DM, less than 10% carb DM, animal sources (instead of the usual peas/soy/gluten etc inflating other protein numbers), high moisture content since cats don’t drink enough water (and my cat has been lounging by her water bowl all day these days, her poor little old kidneys keeps asking her brain for some help), super low phosphorus for my 14 year old baby, and it’s delicious enough that her picky little sister keeps trying to steal it! Love that there’s eggshell to add calcium without the phosphorous content of bones! I might not be able to make /myself/ eat perfectly every day but I am so grateful that my cat enjoys whatever I give her and I can provide her balanced meals right out of a can for just a couple bucks a meal. So my head is scratching why so many cat foods have normalized mediocre nutrition. If you’re spending extra on grain-free, get one like Weruva or tiki that uses animal proteins instead of just more starches and legumes. The fancy hype brands like BB are all just as bad as the cheap ones because of their poor substitutes even if those pretend to be filler free. This one really is.

I never read product review! She loves it, but she was sneaking other cats food!
Edited from 2023 to Oct 2025 And when dr said put flea n tick meds on, suddenly, I put flea n tick meds on her, we have no fleas above 3,500 ft, and she had a severe skin allergy. Well, she was fine, but I put on flea n tick meds and she ran away and hid and licked it! Got sick, vet said stage 3 kidney disease. Put her on cortazone for skin allergy (no fleas or flea dirt!) For 2 years! BAD Off cortazone, She felt better was happy and off steroids, bad for kidneys (a temp vet) her skin cleared up immediately. It was the flea poisoning that did it gave her test stage 3. Dr said, 18 months max. It's now 5 years now. I fed her percription brands, hated them all, so tried chicken and talapia and now she's stage 2! 4 years now eating it she's good. So I know its not nutritionally complete but I add whats missing. She was on flortiflora with perfect poop but antibiotics ruined that! Yellow diarrea, bad for kidneys but gave her water, hydracare and baby food small bit and she laps it up. Now still after antibiotics yellow poop I found out royal canin probiotics are the only one that corrects yellow poop so I'm trying that with medimucil (vet oked) no dehydration and solid poop. But not brown yet.. But this she loves and as long as she's eating vet said ok. So she's now eating a lot and after the horrible metronidazole antibiotics only 3 doses and watery stinky diarrhea she's still stage 2. It was flea n tick meds threw her tests off, and bad Dr's giving her steroids for scabs that hurt her kidneys. Bad dr! I have a good dr now and so far so good!

Cats didn't eat
Plenty of meat and gravy. Looked delicious to me but 5 out of 5 cats gave it a sniff and a small lick but didn't eat after multiple trys.

Lower phosphorus than some therapeutic foods.
I am a big fan of Weruva canned foods in terms of they using high quality products while keeping phosphorus and sodium contents for ckd cats in mind. Weruva wx apparently has even lower phosphorus than some of the therapeautic ckd cat foods. Being said that, I deducted 1 star for taste. My cat eats it but begrudgedly. I should mention weruva canned food in general are hit or miss in terms of taste, so have to try some and see what your cat likes. Overall I like this product as a higher protein alternative for ckd cats. As a comparison, most CKD prescription cat diets are low in protein and high in carbs. Plus quality of protein is usually questionable. It is NOT the case for weruva. Weruva use high quality products.

kidney cat, and all others, LOVE this
I can't tell you how many kidney diets I've tried over my decades of cat ownership. I've probably had 10 cats over the decades need kidney food. It's always been a struggle as I could never find a food that the current kidney patient liked. But my kidney cat loved this one! I was scared when I saw the pieces of meat in the gravy and she is notorious for just licking the gravy and leaving the meat, but she actually ate it all. And then all the other cats in the house wanted in on it. I put the can down for them to lick and they got a taste and now I have a big problem keeping they away from it. Very happy.

High quality ingredients, but my cat turns it down
I have a cat with gut issues and thought this would be a good match for him. Unfortunately, though I would love for him to eat it since it is high quality, he eats two mouthfuls and then will not eat the rest. Sorry, but thanks for a high quality cat food with good ingredients.

my Golden Girl loves it
Snow's protein was a little high (she's on thyroid rx) so I had to switch her to a kidney safe diet. She tends to lap up the gravy and leave the solids in the bowl. I was so happy to see her earlier trying to fish out the last little bit of chicken with her paw! She had a bit of digestive upset (noxious gas!) but she seems to have adjusted to the change and I feel so much better about what she's eating! Looks and smells like watery chowder but it's just the thing for my 16 year old Snowshoe!
