Is this Lothar a good knife?
Is this a good knife? That is the question. Only time will tell but early impressions are positive. It appears to be well made, D2 steel, coated, and a nice carbon fiber style sheath, with a small piece of magnesium rod for fire starting. It fits very securely in the sheath, no chance of accidentally falling out. It requires a fair amount of force to remove. It also comes with a belt clip. The belt clip is a slightly cheaper version of the Blade Tech so I would consider upgrading - for daily/serious/hard use. It was packaged nicely and arrived in very good condition. Fit and finish are nice. Small amount of oil on the blade. The knife was extremely sharp right out of the box. How sharp? It easily shaved hairs from my arm. My 2 main concerns are the very tip of the blade and the screws that secure the handle scales - how well will they hold up with actual use? Again, only time will tell. I will do my best to remember to update this review in a few months and again in a few years. I know that is hopeful but I will try. This knife is comparable to an Esee 4. It appears to be a great value for the money. Is it as good as an Esee 4? I don't know yet. I do know the Esee 3 and 4 models are excellent knives for hard use. So if you can afford to pay $100 then get the Esee and you will not have to worry about it or guess. The Esee are bullet-proof and have an unconditional replacement warranty. If your life depends on it, get the Esee. I will do my best to update this review and let you know how this Lothar holds up over time. Again, early impressions are positive and the price was too good to pass up. I look forward to using this Lothar. Update: After about a week of use I have a few new comments... The handle/scales do have some hot spots, especially on the rear, as they come with very sharp angles. I used a small hand file and removed all of those hot spots and also rounded all sharp edges. The handle is easy to file and you can reshape it to something that works for you. The handle is much more comfortable now. It feels like a different knife. The coating on the metal is fairly nice but does wear a little. This is not a big deal just something to be aware of. D2 is great steel, just be sure to keep light oil on any areas that lose the coating. The mag rod / fire starter works well against the spine of the knife - once you remove the paint/coating on the mag rod.

Extremely impressed!
I don't normally do reviews, but this knife impressed me more than the last 20 knives I've purchased. Some being big brand names and very expensive. The heat treat is done right on this knife, and it actually holds an edge through pretty good abuse. Ergonomics are awesome! The sheath is great! It's done right. I've bought knives in the past that had great lines, but would not hold an edge through much of anything. This knife, with a Rockwell Hardness rating of 62, will definately take abuse and still have a very sharp edge. It would shave hair out of the box, but I like to have a convex edge on my knives, so I sharpened it on a Ken Onion Worksharp, and after putting a polished convex edge on it, set out to abuse it. I chopped and hacked on a 2x4 that would leave most of my other knives in desperate need of a re-sharpening, and this knife will still shave, easily. My knife search over the years has been to find a knife that I would bet my life on. You know, if you only had one knife to carry with you into the wilderness and survive with just it. This is the first knife I've found that I would do just that. So, if you're looking for ยจthat one knife,ยจ this is it!!

Worth 3-5 times the price.
You won't regret it : I am used to buying from Tops Knives. This knife is just as good as knife that cost 3 to 5 times. I am impressed with the overall quality. Grip is really the tricky thing about a knife that is hard to get right. The grip on this knife is somewhat small but very "grippy" which is a perfect combination. The only minus about this knife is that it is hard to remove the knife from the sheath. But that helps with retention, especially for people carrying the knife upside down. The issue can easy be fixed using sand paper. I would not hesitate to buy this knife again.

As sturdy as one could ask for Fire-starting rod painted for some weird reason.
The sheath is fascinating - very sturdy and perfectly fitted. The knife is held in place VERY firmly by a pinch in the rigid sheath that will rub over time on the grip. So while it will wear, I am sure it will remain very firm for hundreds or even thousands of draws. When sheathed, there is no rattle within, so it is silent when worn with soft clothing, though it might rattle against other gear. The composite belt loop and the tube in which the firestarter rod rides in are secured by two nuts, and it can be selectively re-secured to different points on the sheath with or without the firestarter. The extremely sturdy and rigid belt loop opens and closes with a button on one end, and there are spacers within the loop to help to fit various belt widths to over two inches. So taking it on or off doesn't require looping the belt through. Who paints a magnesium rod? First thing to do is scrape the paint off. Or wait until you want to use it. I got a few sparks from it using the odd little bottle-opener/striker. There isn't really a secure place for the little tool but it can easily fit in the sheath with the knife blade if you really feel it is useful. I am not familiar with the brand, but felt like taking a chance. Sometimes what one gets in the mail is clearly meant to give the impression of strength and durability. This product genuinely gives me the impression of over-engineering. No chances taken in design or materials that it will fail to hold up.

High Quality and Sturdy
Excellent Knife. Fit and Finish is on par with much more expensive offerings from other manufacturers. Cutting edge arrived sharp enough for my liking, steel quality feels good, and the knife feels solid and sturdy in your hand. I'm a big guy with large hands and this works well for me. Sheath is sturdy and adjustable as promised, knife retention is solid. Ferro rod works well with the knife, and the mount is well designed. I've been looking at knives in the big box sporting goods stores that come in at well over the $200 dollar mark. I couldn't justify that number and went searching for a solid alternative... this fits the bill at 1/3 of the price or less. If you're quality and budget minded, you like the appearance of the knife and the sheath, and you prefer a large, drop-point design, this is your knife.

Bargain great steel.
Just as I guessed. Excellent very strong survival knife. Well-built and great option to have if you are in the bush for the day or longer. Highly recommend this product for Appalachian trail hikers. My blood pressure would definitely be lower with this gem by my side in the Pemigewasset wilderness for long periods of time. Thanks for the high quality and fair price.

Light,Fast, and capable!! Best Buy!!
Light, fast, and sharp sharp sharp right out of the box!! Handle feels secure to my hand, and performed feathersticking easily. Bought this blade for future treks into the great North woods of Michigan, and thus far has gone thru quite a few pre-tests for camp chores! More than impressed with the BAT and looking forward to many more!! Surprised at it's less than HEAVY construction, and thrilled!!
