Very sturdy, great value
Very sturdy once everything is fit together and a few pieces of gear are installed to keep it from racking. Heavy gauge steel. Captive nuts riveted in almost everywhere. Many of the parts are reversible which makes it hard to screw up, just pay attention to the numbering and eyelet direction on the main vertical posts. Clever design keeps the overall parts number fairly low, good job from their design team. A bit awkward to build at a few steps since several pieces have to be held in place off the floor to bolt it all together. It definitely helps to have an extra pair of hands or perhaps a few small clamps could stand in to hold things in place while getting bolts started. Overall build is pretty simple, just bolting the corners together. You might consider measuring corner to corner as you put the final grunt on the bolts to keep everything square since there's really no corner/racking bracing, but the its quite close even without this effort. Just about everything required comes with the kit including wrenches for the bolts. The loose nut caster interface will actually require two of the smaller wrenches but only one is included. Not a big deal. One or two steps in the instructions make no sense, like instructing the consumer to put a washer on the back side of an interface then use a wrench to hold the washer while tightening the bolt. I'm sorry, do what now!?!? Luckily it is easy enough to figure out, but I think they skipped proofreading the instructions. A supply of cage nuts and bolts are included, but I went with Rack Studs instead. Despite a few very minor flaws still giving it 5 stars for outstanding value, chonkiness factor per dollar, simple and clever design, and fit for purpose. Open design makes installing sliding rails a lot easier. Great for a home lab. Unless you want enclosed side panels this is a great product. Use the money saved to buy rails, shelves, etc.

Very nice design, sturdy and high quality workmanship.
I had been considering the 8U version of this same rack for quite some time, but when Prime day rolled around, this 12U unit was actually on sale for less than the 8U rack. So I took the plunge because I needed a place to set up a renewed Dell R710 server. It comes with a lot of nice extras that show StarTech has put more effort into its units than most of the knock-offs. It's made of very sturdy, powder coated steel. I really appreciate that it came with *all* of the tools that you will need to put it together -- including 2 wrenches and a Philips screwdriver. The instructions are well written and come in a nice little plastic pouch should you need them again. More than enough hardware included as well. Be sure to measure your server before putting this together. I ended up going about six inches longer because of the measurements listed in the manual. Measure the mounting hardware of your server and make sure you get within a few inches of the fully-expanded rack-mounting. It wasn't too tough to adjust the size, though. It works well with a Dell R710 server (see photo) and I plan to add beneath and possibly a fan/power-strip. It's supposed to be able to hold 1200 pounds and that's probably true. I'm not sure how easy it would be to move with that much weight. It's pretty hefty and the addition of a huge server makes it tough enough to move already. But it's not made to be mobile all the time. It's a good way to get things set up and put it in a cool closet when you are done. I'm happy with this and I'd definitely buy from StarTech again. The quality is much better than what I expected. Solid 5 stars.

Awesome Server Rack for an fantastic price
This rack really impressed me. I didn't have any issues with the packaging and all the parts arrived as expected. The box it came in was pretty thin for how rough and sturdy the metal parts are but in my case it was fine. Assembly was a little difficult because the instructions it came with had images that were kind of hard to see so I just relied on the product images on amazon. There is a part when you have to screw together 3 different metal pieces so the order could be important. It includes tools (actually good quality) to help install however I still needed a wrench to tighten the screws on the wheels which was a bummer. Over all the assembled rack is SOLID. I have a slight warp to it though where my Rack Mac Pro 2019 won't click both sides of the locking mechanism. I have to push the right side in to make it click. Pretty minor honestly and probably easily fixable if I loosen some screws and retighten them. Overall I love this rack. The included tools were great but they need to include something to be able to screw on the wheels because the nut and bolt just spin without holding both sides. The Rack is super sturdy and I have no doubt my Rack Mac Pro, UPS/backup power, and networking equipment won't be going anywhere. I love that It's adjustable.

Great sturdy rack
Shipped from amazon.com. Outside amazon box & inside OEM box showed signs of abuse at time of delivery, although nothing was missing or damaged. This item seems to be a newer designed rack compared to other StarTech.com racks. Capable of holding twice the weight of previous designs, it is very solid and sturdy. Assembly was simple enough, it took me about 2.5 hours without rushing. The assembly instructions were a bit on the light side, however if one takes time and care it's relatively smooth. My first step in assembly was to unwrap all the pieces to get an ideal of what might go where. Initially a bit unclear, instructions had the rack on its side, I chose to assemble mine upright. It was very helpful to have an extra hand for a few steps, but unnecessary if one is patient and methodical. I hand tightened all bolts until the frame was complete, allowing for little trouble aligning bolts into the sleeve nuts. Only on one occasion did I misalign a bolt. It was very obvious that the bolt was cross threading due to the immediate difficulty in hand tightening. I pulled the bolt out and use more care to allow it to align properly. I aligned my side beams at positions 3 & 4 allowing for a 29 inch depth. I had no issues mounting Dell rapidrails or other rails. The kit does include two wrenches, I still found myself going to my toolbox to get a 10mm ratchet wrench to tighten the castor nuts. I opted not to use the wire management accessories, it appears they need installed before placing items in the rack. They also stick out a fair bit on the sides, interfering with where I intended to locate my rack. I found plenty of ways to zip-tie my wires neatly to the side post of the rack. The only issue I perceive is with a caster wheel. When moving the rack around it makes a snapping sound, it might be missing a ball bearing, but still moves smoothly and suites my needs. This rack is solid! once it's assembled and tightened there is no perceivable flexing and i'd feel pretty confident setting a V-8 engine on it (without the casters). The kit is good!

Rack is perfect once assembled, great build quality,, the only flaw is the instructions
The rack, once assembled, was perfect. Very sturdy, casters are solid and the adjustable depth rails are a great feature. Assembly was relatively quick, even factoring in the mistake made due to lackluster directions. Most everyone else on here has mentioned the directions in a negative way but I don't believe anyone has pointed out the exact issue. The problem lies in a lack of clear text directions and the illustrations not clearly showing the orientations of 1-2 parts. When assembling the rack, please make sure to ensure that the base pedestal (front/back) has the pre-drilled holes for bolting the rack to the floor on the outside of the rack. Now, I know that seems obvious to anyone that's assembled or worked with a server rack before, but when you're assembling something by following the directions of the manual, you tend to not think about that as you're going along and just doing what the manual says. The reason I didn't catch it was because the illustrations did NOT show the pre-drilled holes at all so there was no way to tell that they had to be orientated a certain way. Once I got to the part of installing casters, I realized that I was missing the 4th hole for screwing the casters in and quickly realized the front/back base pedestal was reversed. Quick and easy fix, but it could easily have been avoided with either a text cue or a better illustration. All that being said, would definitely buy again and recommend to anyone else. Great price, very durable, and all around great rack despite the instructions.

excellent product
The "StarTech.com 4-Post 42U Mobile Open Frame Server Rack" is exactly what I needed. I like that it is sturdy, has detailed instructions, and came with all hardware + tools needed to assemble it. It is compatible with shelves and rails of various brands that I've purchased for it. Assembly is not difficult, but for the 42U size, it _is_ a two-person task - at least it was for me & my wife. Fully assembled with the casters/wheels installed, the 42U does not quite fit through the interior doorways in our house - it's about 1/8" too tall. Overall, I'm very satisfied, and highly recommend this rack. Note: My photo includes accessories that were purchased separately: Power supplies, shelves, server rails, network switches, servers, PCs, cables, etc. (And yes, I know I need to improve my cable management)

So worth it! Wish i'd had purchased years ago
Hey all, I was in the market for a rack now that I have two PowerEdge R620's and a handful of networking equipment. The clutter of stacking this equipment will go away with this rack! Based on some negative reviews - I didn't experience any issues whatsoever. It also arrived sooner than it said it would and the tracking notified me that. Anyhow, I attached a couple pics, please excuse my messy house. This thing is a must for a home lab setup (maybe seems like it's too big at first), but I guarantee the space will be appreciated later down the road. Here's my pros, success points thus far along with maybe a con or two. Pros: This thing is solid, heavy, was well packaged (all parts were individually wrapped in bubble wrap within the box and even additional plastic for the sliding rails to protect the nice black finish from scuffs). Clear instruction sticker is put on the box alerting the shipping provider to keep the item flat (sorry, girlfriend threw the box out since the cat was going crazy wanting to climb inside it and such...). UPS brought to my front door (I met him outside), and he said is it okay if I put it here..this thing is heavy lol. The box was in good shape other than a hole that was punched in (during shipping), however there was NO damage to the parts. Instructions were included inside a nice plastic folder insert - Thank-you StarTech! This ensured the instructions were kept in pristine condition despite being crammed into the box. Was easy as heck to assemble. I made my girlfriend help since she was just sitting on the couch, however this could have easily been done by one person in less than an hour. I just had her kind of hold some of the parts while I located the bolts/washers to fasten them in. My Dell rail fit just perfect! The instructions for measuring the depth are spot on / make sense. Cons: Shipping time - took close to a month, but arrived sooner than I had originally expected. It's heavy as heck, so maybe that's the issue? Was free shipping though so cannot complain. The included tools (little wrenches) aren't right? Who cares - who uses tools included in these kind of assembly kits anyhow? I just grabbed my 1/2" socket and it was a breeze. That's honestly about it, assuming I don't run into further issues when adding in more equipment and moving to my final resting place for the rack. It has wheels - I will install tomorrow. Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any questions. I posted this under my girlfriends Amazon account since I ordered it through hers. She has prime, I don't.. free shipping. Take care all! Thank-you for reading.

This should last awhile
I got this to replace another rack I had. The other rack was enclosed and I used it to keep a lot of my stuff in, however it started to get cramped in there and I needed a new one. I decided to splurge and get a big boy rack. I put this together by myself and didn't have too many issues. The instructions were not that great but it was pretty straight forward. I like that it has wheels on it so I can move it around. The quality is really great and I ended up hanging on it like a monkey to see if it could support me. No issues there. I wish it had better cable management. It does come with some connectors, but I would have liked to see something I can use inside instead of outside. Still a great rack.
