A guide to the history behind the world of Harry Potter--just in time for the last Harry Potter movie, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Part II) Harry Potter lives in a world that is both magical and historical. Hogwarts pupils ride an old-fashioned steam train to school, notes are taken on parchment with quill pens, and Muggle legends come to life in the form of werewolves, witches, and magical spells. This book is the first to explore the real history in which Harry's world is rooted. Did you know that bezoars and mandrakes were fashionable luxury items for centuries? Find out how Europeans first developed the potions, spells, and charms taught at Hogwarts, from Avada Kedavra to love charms. Learn how the European prosecution of witches led to the Statute of Secrecy, meet the real Nicholas Flamel, see how the Malfoys stack up against Muggle English aristocrats, and compare the history of the wizarding world to real-life history. Gives you the historical backdrop to Harry Potter's world Covers topics ranging from how real British boarding schools compare to Hogwarts to how parchment, quills, and scrolls used in the wizarding world were made Includes a timeline comparing the history of the wizarding world to Muggle ""real"" history Filled with fascinating facts and background, Harry Potter and History is an essential companion for every Harry Potter fan. Review: Must have for Harry Potter fans - This is a great read for any fan of both history and Harry Potter. The author does a great job of interweaving the Potterverse with actual history. Readers will not be able to help but learn. I would not give this book to anyone under 14 years of age due to some of the more violent truths of history they may not be ready for. Review: Great Read - I used this book for a project for a witchcraft course that I was taking in college. The information was really helpful and I got an A on the project. I enjoyed reading this. It's a great read for any Harry Potter fans.

Great Fan Theory
This isn't confirmed by JK Rowling but it seems to tie everything of the worlds history to the magical Harry Potter universe. I love how it touches on every subject including christianity. its a very good read. LOVE IT

Interesting, slightly disorganized
I enjoyed this book, with two caveats. First, and Potter fans please forgive me for saying this, the book talks about the Potter world as if it were factually true. Now this approach is cute, but in a few places I found it hard to tell whether the book was telling me about real "Muggle" history or about something that happened in Rowling's imagination. In the worst cases the book draws sociological conclusions from things that didn't really happen. One shouldn't try to draw real-world conclusions from situations that are entirely imaginary. Second, I really found the book to be disorganized. There are chapters and subheadings, to be sure, but the book read like a huge collection of random thoughts. Part of this feeling no doubt comes from the fact that the book is a collection of essays by many different authors. But there was little organization that I could see, and so, despite the wealth of interesting facts and observations, I found it difficult to make sense of the book as a whole. I think the book would be vastly improved by a clearer structure. In short, I found the book to be okay, certainly readable, and probably of interest to many Potter fans. But I think the vast amount of material, with additional editing, could make a better book than it does.

Absorbing
I bought this book after hearing Nancy Reagin on the Mugglenet Academia podcast and it's terrific! There's a very wide scope of history covered by a wide variety of authors and the fun of the book is that "real" history is treated alongside wizarding history and you enjoyably learn lots about both. Highly recommended!

Storia di maghi e babbani
Un saggio appassionante, consigliatissimo a chiunque ami la storia e il mago occhialuto piu' famoso del secolo. Un lavoro accurato, ma scritto in maniera scorrevole.
