Would this be good for a nursing student with a lot of big, heavy books?

This bag is great if you're carrying some books as well as a laptop or larger tablet. Depending on the number and physical size of the books, you may be able to fit all of them into it. As far as weight is concerned, I haven't had any complaints with this bag. I'm not trying to carry a couple hundred pounds of books, of course, but if you can pick up your stack of books, this bag can carry them.

How wide is the sleeve in back to fit on the handle of a larger bag?

The "sleeve" is 11 inches from seam to seam, so figure about 10.25 to 10.5 inches of real width. It is only about 2 inches tall, however, so it is more like a strap than a true sleeve. I have never tried to attach the bag to anything, but the strap does not stretch much, so be aware of that.

Can I reset the lock code? I accidentally pressed the button twice on the bottom and it set it to some number I don’t know.

Without knowing the current code, I do not believe it is possible to reset the lock. However, with a little time, you can discover the current code. The combination wheels will turn even with pressure on the latch. Yes, there are 1000 combinations, but it took me less than 5 minutes to check all of them and the lock easily opened when I got to the correct number. Not the answer you're looking for, I'm sure, but hopefully this will help.
