Can my 1 inch diameter pole be used with this?

Yes. Most pool Poles are 1 inch. Give or take.

I can’t get a suction how do I work it? Can’t find a manual online.

The suction comes from your filter. Is your filter clean? Did you blow out all the air in the hose before connecting it to the filter? To do that, hold your hose to the water outtake to blow out all the air. When no more bubbles come out, transfer the hose underwater to the suction. Those are the only 2 ways I am aware of creating suction for your vacuum. Clean your filter often if there is a lot of debris. Also, be sure your hose isn't clogged.
