What would I use for the front crankset / cassette? There are 2 gears in front. Trying to move from down tube to drop bars.

Won't work. You'll need bar end shifters or thr combined brake and shifter combo (aka "brifters"). These thumbies are only for flat or riser handlebars

Do you use the same thumb lever for shifting up and down through gears?

It works very well for shifting through the gears on my bike. I only have 8 gears on the back, and it is the best rear shifters I have ever used.
