Berlin, 1940. Working class couple Otto and Anna Quangel receive the news that their only son has lost his life in the battlefield and decide to resist the Nazi regime in their very own way. Soon the Gestapo is hunting "the threat". Review: Great book and movie with compelling acting. - Really liked this movie. So much so, that I got the book. Great acting! Review: Moving film about an attempt to damage Nazism! Highly recommend! - I thought the movie was outstanding. The intrigue and the desire of parents who had lost a son to the war to aid in the destruction of Nazism was so moving. I highly recommend this movie to anyone who has the slightest interest in WWII.

There are always exceptions t the rule, even in Nazi Germany
A much needed story of how not everyone in Germany was ready to follow Hitler, even at the ultimate price of their own lives. And how it affected some of the police as well, whose heart was not in the terror.

Timely Message
A well made film. Powerful message of courage for here and now.

There were germans who were against Htler and paid with their lives.
Interesting movie on a theme we rarely come across. The quality of the film is weak, the sound is very weak, but it is worth while for its content.

SLOW-MOVING FICTIONALIZED STORY OF TWO REAL-LIFE GERMAN HEROES IN WWII
ALONE IN BERLIN is the story of Otto and Elise Hampel. Their young soldier son is killed in action. They pool their grief into one bold action --writing anti-Nazi and anti-Hitler messages on postcards to secretly leave in public places around Berlin. I was never clear as to why they would take such a risk and I felt the film was slow moving and not very suspenseful. According to the movie, Otto admits to writing close to 300 postcards and only 19 were not turned into the police. Why did they keep writing the postcards when they could have been assured of a deadly fate? The 1940's setting and clothes are nice to see but I was disappointed in the film overall. I wondered how historically accurate the film was considering it is based on a "novel," by Hans Falada. There was a dedication to the couple at the end. I would have liked to have seen some extras on the DVD to explore the real Otto and Anna. I've watched so many WWII films and it always amazes me that we know people are German because they are speaking British English with German accents. I guess that makes it authentic. Emma Thompson and Brendan Gleeson are A+ as always, but somehow the story just did not work as well as it should have. Daniel Bruhl as the befuddled police inspector is an actor to watch but here he is in a similar role as in the ZOOKEEPER'S WIFE. There is something amazingly sad in ALONE IN BERLIN. I did some research and the author of the novel changed a few facts. Otto and Elise Hampel became Otto and Anna Quangel in the novel and it was Elise's brother not son that was killed in the war. I'm not sure why this unusual story of courage had to be fictionalized. A more fact-based story might have shed some light onto why this brave couple took such deadly risks.

An excellent film, very well acted and produced. Based on a true life couple Otto and Else Hempel who left anti-Fascist cards about Berlin during the years 1940 to 1943. The novelist Hans Fallada wrote an excellent post-war book with the same title based on these characters. I have never seen Emma Thompson in better form. Thoroughly recommended.
