Sunbeam 2371 MixMaster Stand Mixer, White

Our family have been using Mixmasters since my mother got one as a wedding present in 1939. That one lasted into the eighties. We in turn bought one in the early seventies and only just donated it to the local charity shop upon the arrival of this one, its successor. Nothing wrong with it, we just wanted a change. The new one is a worthy successor to its predecessors. We like the glass bowls, which make it easy to monitor progress, and the fact that the mixer is made to use two different sizes means that you can choose the one that suits what you are mixing. Last week for example the large bowl was used to mix an angel food cake, and the small one to mix the icing. We also find that two beaters are more efficient than the one used by other makes. All in all, a great machine.

I purchased this mixer when it was $60. I purchased this mixer because my cousin had it, and she loved it. She is a baker and has made a wedding cake with it. She uses it very, very often for Italian meringue buttercream (which requires so much beating), and pound cakes. She also has had this mixer for awhile, I think 4-5 years. It still works perfectly. I was nervous because of the negative reviews(I believe I read each one), but this mixer worked perfectly for me. It is (was) my first mixer, so I didn't have anything to compare it to. It kneaded bread dough twice a week, and this was a white bread dough that used 5 cups of flour, and made two loaves. It kneaded it for 5 mins each time. Sometimes my dough climbed the hooks, but otherwise the mixer never sounded strained. I once over kneaded the dough and came back 10 mins later, and the mixer still perfectly fine. The mixer does vibrate some while mixing, but it did not scoot or slide. I whipped egg white to stiff peaks countless times, on speed 12 (always start lower to loosen up the egg whites) and they were done in 6-7 mins. Make sure you scrape down the bowl when mixing. The bowls are wide, glass, and sturdy. They are a bit heavy, and even once dropped (accidentally) they didn't break. The dough hooks work well. For the beaters, one beater has a circular cap on it, which if you was the beaters immediately after using is ok, but hard to clean once whatever is on it dries. The whisks can bend, so I just store them upright. I didn't use the mixer as a stand mixer, but I did try it. For me it was heavy and unyielding. When I first used it, it had a slightly metallic, electrical smell, but it went away after the second use. The scent wasn't strong either. I loved the mixer, and I made so many delicious foods with it. I usually stored it in my bedroom, and I was the sole user of it. Unfortunately, my brother dropped it once. I wasn't there when it was dropped, but I know it was from higher than counter height. The next day, I tried to turn it on and it would only stay on speed one. Even when I turned the dial up, the speed wouldn't change. The beaters didn't move, and the inside of the mixer sounded like something was straining. So, yes it broke. I would buy another one anytime.

I bought this Sunbeam Mixmaster to replace my 37 year old Sunbeam Mixmaster. The old motor, which had been rebuilt once, worked, but the speed would not stay set where I put it. The new and old stand are designed a little different, but the old glass bowls fit on the new Mixmaster. The new glass bowls are heavier and taller than my old bowls, and do not have pour spouts. The old bowls are 1 1/2 quart and 3 quart. And the new bowls are 4 quart and 2 quart. Having the 4 quart bowl will be handy for large cake batter recipes. The turntable where the bowls sit does not come off for cleaning like on my old Mixmaster. The way the motor works on the stand is different than my old Mixmaster. You have to push a release button on the side of the stand to tip the motor up or down. You also have to push a release button on the top of the motor's handle to release the beaters. The electric cord is also attached to the new motor, and is pretty short. The cord on my old Mixmaster is longer, and detaches. The new motor has a power button, that revs the motor up to high speed for a few seconds, or while you hold it down. My old Mixmaster did not have this feature. I have tested the motor and beaters on the new Mixmaster, but haven't used it yet with food. I'm sure that I will be very happy with it. Hopefully, it will last another 37 years. IMPORTANT NOTE: This Mixmaster was advertised with 2 glass bowls and 3 sets of beaters (regular, dough hooks, and whisks), but what arrived was missing the small bowl and the whisks. I had to resolve this with Amazon Customer Service. The seller claimed that they do not always design their amazon postings, but it is certainly up to the seller to review their offerings for accuracy. I'm sure that they will do this more carefully going forward. This seller was prompt and courteous. I would be willing to order from them again, but will verify the product offering before ordering.
