About the Author Harold Davis began his professional football career with East Fife in 1950 and was drafted for national service the following year. He was seriously injured during the Korean War and spent almost two years in recovery. He played for Rangers between 1956 and 1964, during which time he made 261 appearances in the first team. Now 78, Davis devotes much of his time to supporting the Erskine Trust. Paul Smith is the author of numerous books on football, including For Richer, For Poorer: Rangers—The Fight for Survival, To Barcelona and Beyond and Rangers Cult Heroes. We Are The People
As a Rangers supporter who watched Harold Davis play for the'Gers in the early 1960's and as someone who also worked in South Korea for four years, I found the book fascinating. His wounds were so horrific that, at one stage, it was considered doubtful that he would ever walk again and it made me realise that whatever problems the rest of us have, there is always someone worse off. It is not, of course, a history of the Korean War but simply one man's experience, albeit very short, of the conflict and his subsequent personal physical battle to resume his footballing career. For this reason I think it will appeal more to Rangers fans rather than to those more widely interested in military history, but I liked it. Tougher than Bullets is a very appropriate title.
