Best value and performance
I bought this ring for my canon 70-200mm F4. The rings performs very well. It fits tight and secure. It is the best alternative to the original ring considering the price. The material is very sturdy and the color is basically identical to the lens. Unlike other reviews, this ring does not have any play and feel very secure. I use the ring to support the lens and my Xsi camera. I have done 3-5 minutes exposures, and I did not notice any movement or flexing of the camera at all.

Paired with my Canon 70-200mm f4/L lens
After investing a good chunk of $$ on a quality "L" lens, i wanted to find a tripod ring that could support that kind of weight. This one so far has worked beautifully. Very sturdy. Well made considering the lower price point. Had compared it with a friend's Canon tripod ring & its very comparable. Of course when you spend that kind of $$ on a lens, the natural fear is to entrust your gear with a cheaper support device. But in using this ring on a couple of our family vacations & lugging that lens around all day on hikes, i can attest that it stands up to the constant movement & attaching/detaching from my tripod. Couldn't be more satisfied.

It holds the 70-200mm lens for a lot less
This works just fine with my 70-200mm lens. I recommend it only for a casual/amateur photographer, though... I would NOT recommend it to anyone that will be using it regularly - its made almost entirely of plastic, and I'm not convinced the collar locking screw would last very long. Also, the screw mount on the base - I'm not sure, but I don't think it's metal. Little flakes of "metal" paint came off the first time I used it.

Maybe This Is Why The Canon Ring Costs So Much More
I just took delivery of this tripod mount ring so I haven't used it in the field yet. It looks nicely made, it opens and closes easily and it's easy to put on the lens and take off. The color matches the lens perfectly. My problem is that when the ring is mounted to the tripod (a Gitzo 1325) with the lens in the ring and on the camera (a Canon 5D Mark II) it's easy to induce a little forward-backwards motion of the ring by gentle hand pressure. The motion isn't at the connection between the ring and the tripod, it's movement of the ring itself, apparently coming at the clamp used to open and close the ring. It isn't a lot, maybe a few millimeters, but it's definitely there and it isn't hard to create. This may be the same thing that Thomas Burnside noted in his review. The problem appears to exist because the ring clamp doesn't close quite tightly or firmly enough despite tightening it as much as I can by hand. Or maybe it's just the material used to make the ring as Thomas Burnside suggested in his review. But when when the ring and lens are mounted to the tripod everything should in my opinion be rock solid. I shouldn't be able to easily move the ring/lens back and forth by hand as I can. I don't have a Canon ring to compare so I don't know if the same movement exists with it or not. But if not then maybe that explains the huge price differential between this ring and the Canon ring. Despite this movement the camera and lens are still balanced over the tripod better than when there's no ring and the camera is attached to the tripod. So it may be that the movement described above will have no practical effect. But then again maybe it will.

Solid Product
The ring attaches easily and has a firm grip and does exactly what it is supposed to do. Worthwhile product was sent quickly and well packaged.

Mine fits tight and works just like the original at one TENTH the price.
I am not sure about other reviews, but my mount IS plastic, but it seems pretty high quality, and LOOKS like the original Canon mount. It fits well, and seems very sturdy with NO twisting or shifting. This ring IS designed for the IS version of the lens, and maybe people are having trouble based on slight variances in the lenses from different years. I don't know, but mine fits great, has been used on a couple photo shoots, and for the price it can't be beat.

JUNK! Do Not Purchase This Ring Mount!
Do Not Purchase this item. It is so poorly manufactured as to make it UNUSABLE for its intended purpose. Manufacturing Flaw #1: The threaded screwhole is not sufficiently deep to permit FULLY tightening the screw when attaching the tripod plate to its foot. Manufacturing Flaw #2: The area of the foot immediately surrounding the aforementioned threaded hole is "crowned," causing this region to be higher than the plane of the rest of the foot pad. The horrible consequence of both flaws is this: One is unable to tightly attach one's 70-200mm telephoto lens to the tripod. The whole arrangement nearly freely turns about the screw hole. J U N K!
