Not just for bodybuilders
After being diagnosed with throat cancer, there were a flurry of specialists I needed to see. One of them was a nutritionist. Her main concern was in getting enough protein despite being unable to chew, and having difficulty swallowing. At the time, I was drinking pre-made protein shakes, sometimes throwing them in a smoothie. She suggested protein powder, which I honestly had not considered. The only ones I could find in the supermarkets around me were all flavored, just like the protein shakes. I'm not against stuff that is flavored, but I needed something more versatile. I found this unflavored protein powder. It's a perfect mix-in for the oatmeal I was able to eat. It didn't noticeably alter the flavor. One review said that it had a sort of oatmeal-y scent and taste. I agree with that, but a) I was mixing it into oatmeal anyway, and b) I also mix it into nutrient-dense smoothies, and guess what I also throw into those? The treatments are over, and the cancer is gone. Now that I'm getting back to a normal diet again, I still use this daily in my oatmeal. I use a spoon to mix it in after covering it with the milk I add (more protein). I often end up with some pea-sized lumps (which I then use the back of the spoon to mash against the side of the bowl to get rid of), and a good amount of lentil-sized lumps. The leftover lumps are all but unnoticeable as I eat the oatmeal - not once have I notice if I chewed one of these tiny lumps. In smoothies, this doesn't happen as that uses a blender. Any lumps that remain in my oatmeal though, I put that on my lazy prep and not using a whisk or something rather than against the product. I haven't tried this in a glass of water to see if the flavor truly is detectable in any recipe it's used in, but I've tried other things here and there and added the powder (threw it in marinara sauce a couple of times), and would never have known if it was there if I hadn't added it myself. I also agree with another review about the protective seal. Even using a knife, I often need 2 passes: One for the upper half 'ring', and then again for the bottom half. Then I get to play the 'let's see if I can get every trace of this paper/ foil covering off the mouth of the bottle' game. None of this is a complaint, by all means protect the heck out of the food I'm going to eat, and when I say game, I do honestly enjoy it! As such, I use about a scoop a day, sometimes an extra scoop once or twice a week, and the bottle lasts me a month and a half. Not a bad deal when a scoop provides 25g of protein!

Affordable protein
The product arrived with a safety seal and a freshness seal which is nice to see. The freshness seal was a job in itself to remove. It required my teeth, the handle side of a spoon, strategic peeling and patience. Once open (workout completed...lol) there was a very mild scent somewhat like malt or raw oats but, I'm not really sure because it was unique. The scoop was visible and not buried thankfully. I tasted the powder off of my finger and it had once again a very mild taste somewhat like malt or raw oats. I have not taken protein supplements since my days of body building which have long since passed. Back then I was taking EAS Myoplex and it was then, and is now, extremely expensive. Considering I weighted 268lb when I started lifting again and dropped 38lb over several months, the cost for protein would of been too much for my budget supplement or food wise. The problem was that I was extremely sore and it was taking an extreme amount of time to heal between workouts, so I decided to go back to protein supplements. Daily I make a vegetable and berry smoothie that I put all of my powders and supplements in. So, after putting THIS protein concentrate into that same smoothie, it did change the taste. It made it again taste kind of like a mild malt flavoring which did permeate throughout the mixture and was stronger than expected. It wasn't a bad flavor mind you, but it was definitely not flavorless. I think this taste is typical for whey protein because I did recognize it. I went with the concentrate rather than the isolate because of price and taste. Yes, you get a few less grams of protein per scoop but, I didn't want a chemical taste from the over processing of the isolate. I will try the isolate from this same manufacturer next and compare them. The most important point is that this is an affordable, 3rd party tested, contaminate limit product and is comparable to most of the products produced by this company. No it is not tasteless but, it does not have a bad taste. Considering the amount of eggs (which are comparable pricewise right now) I would have to eat daily this seemed a much more viable option.

One of the most disgusting things I've ever tasted in my life
Leading up to a surgery, my surgeon wanted me to increase my protein intake so much that it would have caused me to gain weight if I tried to do it all with solid food, so I decided to try whey protein concentrate. I bought 2 lbs. of the chocolate flavor and 2 lbs. of the unflavored powder. I had done a Google search about the unflavored kind, asking if it was flavorless. The answer was no, and it was explained that it tastes like watered down milk, and it was best used in savory foods, or you could mix it with broth, which would be less caloric, so that's what I decided to do. I tried it mixed in chicken broth, and it was so disgusting that, after one sip, I poured it down the drain and threw the entire container of protein in the trash. I am out $36, all because I don't like to ingest things that suck. This would only work for someone with no taste buds whatsoever. The only positive thing I can think of to say is that it did dissolve easily. It also goes in the garbage quite easily. If you make the same mistake I did, hopefully you have money to burn. I could have given it to someone else, but I like my friends and family too much to inflict this on them. The trash is exactly where it belongs.

Worth it. Super good. No weird taste.
Great unflavored protein powder. One star off because can can be a little hard to get all the clumps out, but it’s not so lumpy that it’s an issue. I’ve had far worse trouble with some more “mainstream” brands. I hate the taste of most protein powders, so I mix this with milk and ovaltine and it’s awesome. Plus, the value for cost is right on point. I use it to fend off cravings for a morning biscuit during my weight loss journey, and it works great. Gives me a solid protein kick to stave off the hunger and curb the cravings. I think it’s awesome.

Doesn't clump
This is my new favorite protein powder! Flavor: I don't like flavored protein powder at all. I think they taste bad and the stronger flavor is harder to cover up, and the added ingredients definitely aren't worth it. This powder has straightforward ingredients, and while I can taste the whey protein if I mix it with very plain foods, it isn't necessarily a bad taste and it's so easy to cover up with a stronger flavor, like peanut butter or chocolate or berries. Clumping: I've gotten used to only adding protein powder to smoothies because so many of them clump, but today I added this one to oatmeal and the oatmeal is great! I could definitely taste the whey in the plain oatmeal, but I never eat plain oatmeal anyway, I just tried it out of curiosity. My favorite way to eat it (which doesn't taste like whey at all) is with just a splash of maple syrup in the oatmeal itself, topped with homemade blueberry syrup (just simmer some blueberries with maple syrup and it keeps in the fridge for a week or maybe even two) some banana slices, almond butter slathered directly on the banana slices, and a few chopped pecans or walnuts for texture. I love that I can have this breakfast now without having to worry about getting enough protein. I will warn that I only added about 1/3 scoop per oatmeal serving, because there is also protein in the oatmeal itself, almond butter, and pecans. Adding more powder would be an experiment but worth a try for anyone who has higher protein goals. The point is, this is the first powder I've used that works well in things other than smoothies, and that speaks more to me about the quality than anything else.

Good protein powder, definitely unflavored
I like these big jars of Nutricost protein powder because it's a lot of servings in one container. This particular variant is unflavored, and therefore no sucralose in it like the flavored ones have (which I've not only found to be too sweet, I apparently don't tolerate large amounts of sucralose very well, in the GI sense). The protein content is quite good, although if you want to maximize it, you might want to check out their 'Whey Isolate' type instead. Costs a little more but has a higher protein gram count and is supposedly more bio-available. Still, this one is good, too. The jar when I received it was well-sealed and comes with its own measuring scoop, although you may have to dig for it as it may settle during shipping. Speaking of settling though, don't freak when you see the jar isn't completely full. They sell by weight, not volume and I did the weighing—you get the full amount. Overall, it dissolves well, whether stirred by spoon, immersion blender, or specialized shake blender, all of which I've tried. And it really is unflavored—I typically add some ingredients to give it a little, such as maybe 2oz of juice or perhaps cinnamon powder, vanilla extract, and/or baker's cocoa, along with whatever optional sweetener you might like. Or not. It's up to you how you want to dress this up. Even with nothing else added, it's palatable and leaves no grit or anything. It's great stuff and has been a constant companion during my recent fitness efforts.

OK lower cost option
Given how expensive whey protein has become I'm looking to find lower cost alternatives. This brand was not approved by a major testing lab because it had more cholesterol than listed but I'm not too worried about that, it was otherwise fine. Taste for me is good, I always get unflavored whey. Color is a little darker than I'm used to and I'm not sure why that would be. The main problem I have is how hard it is to mix. I have a shaker cup with a ball and a grid inside and I still can't dissolve this all. I have to put it into a blender to get it to mix. That's an extra step I don't have to take with higher quality whey isolates. But, I get that with a lower price comes some trade offs. I'm glad not to get any gastric disturbances with this whey as that can sometimes be a problem for me.
