so the two units have filters fitted already and there are spares in the box too? or just two carbon filters in total?

There are just the 2 in the box, no spares. They do help with the smell but once the carbon has exhausted its hard to get replacements bur I've used activated carbon granules in a mesh bag which works. Also I've now installed the printer into a grow tent with a carbon filter and inline fan which eliminates the smell and fumes.
