Fluval Bio-Stratum is a mineral-rich volcanic soil substrate designed for planted aquariums. Its lightweight 1 mm granules promote healthy root growth while activating beneficial bacteria to jumpstart the nitrogen cycle and reduce ammonia quickly. Fragile particle structure necessitates easy handling
We bought this medium on the author's recommendation, Linsay Sisti, in her book "The Ultimate Guide to Houseplant Propagation". We intended to use this medium to propagate some of our indoor tropical plants. While it is too early to offer definitive results, it is apparent that the propagules are accepting the medium as they root. The brown color of the granules is pleasing, and so far, there is no odor. Three varieties of Chlorophytum are now propagating in Fluval 12697 and are progressing nicely, showing no sign of disease. Please note that Chlorophytum (Spider Plant) is very easy to propagate. We have noted that the new roots are nearly reaching the bottom of the container, while the crowns look very healthy. Nothing propagated requires a pH adjustment, and in several instances, the container medium is one-third filled with water to encourage rooting, as Sisti suggests for using a Fluval stratum.

Must have for planted tanks
This stuff is kinda expensive but it totally necessary for planted tanks. Use it as a base and put gravel or sand on top then plant the tank. The fluval stratum will settle and the top layer will secure the it in. After a few days of running the tank the water will clear up after planting.

Amazing for tissue culture plants
Great quality fluval i have recieved . I am usong this to mix and setablish some tissue culture plants . It comes in great quantity.its worth the money. Its very easy to use without creating any mess like potting soil or other mixtures of plants . I highly recomend this who wants to propogate plants or cuttings. It also keeps plangs fungus free and very less chances to get thsm root rot.

Excellent product not affecting water clarity
I was skeptical about using this as a substrate concerned about cloudiness in the water. This was so easy to use and looks great as I covered it with the gravel but still have the benefit of the mineral rich benefits and still have excellent water clarity. Excellent product that will be used in other tanks.

Reliable results every time
I have a few freshwater planted nano tanks, all 20 gallons or smaller, and I have used this or the Shrimp Stratum as the base substrate in every single one. As long as you do not stir it up too much, it keeps the water clear and does exactly what it is supposed to do. If you want to cap it with sand, you do not need to rinse it first. It will not turn the water brown unless it is handled incorrectly. Plants grow really well in it and when the nutrients eventually run out, which takes a long time, you can just add root tabs and keep the tank going for years. My tanks stay crystal clear and the plants look great. I recommend this to anyone who wants to keep live plants in their aquarium.

Works as intended.
It works as intended as a aquasoil, its quite clear as I filled my tank despite the dusty warning. It is a nice pure black which is expected, and it a lot of soil then expected so worth the money. I haven't cleaned it yet, but I'll maybe make edit after I clean it. Only 4 stars because I haven't added my plants or have done a clean of it yet.

Great live plant aquarium soil
This is great aquarium soil for live plants. My plants in my 5 gal aquarium are doing great and my guppies are just loving their new tank set up. I’ve had this tank set up for a few months now and I have not lost one aquarium plant and all my plants are growing very well. I also love the black colour because It makes the plants, fish and the rock decorations stand out beautifully in the tank. If I decide to set up a second live plant fish aquarium I would definitely be purchasing this aquarium soil again.
