Winsor & Newton Brush Cleaner & Restorer, 16.0-oz Bottle

This works on both oil and acrylic paint consistently even when dried on. You have to let the brush soak for a while. It seems pricey, but it is better than spending money on others that don’t work. I don’t notice any odor with it.

Before using Liquitex Flo Aid Restorative Additive for my acrylic paints, I was just using boling hot water with a touch of dish soap. This worked OK... for some paints. But for those that were completely dried out, I needed something stronger. A Painter fruend, an expert ( in my opinion) gave me this recommendation, & it made a vast difference. Yes, I still use my boiling water trick to thin out my acrylics here and there. **In fact thats how i clean my brushes, & i also paint throughout with boiling water to keep the brushes' form.** But for paints that can't be saved- I turn to this product alone. Sometimes I will try boiling water along with it, so I don't have to use so much, and it definitely helps. But I had an entire set of paints in small jars that had not yet been used, yet all were completely dried up. I spent about 45 min. stirring in this Liquitex solution, & with mercy, my paint set was thankfully restored to a creamy, whipped consistency! As far as being easy to use, i will say that the only draw back is the cap. I started pouring it into an eye dropper, so i could have better control over how much I use... since the cap tends to spill out too much at one time and tends to waste it. But that's just my experience. Because I did this, this product lasted me at least a year. For this small bottle, and how often I restore paint, that is quite incredible. I still have half my bottle left. So I suppose you could say the value for the money makes it a great deal, since it has such a long shelf life. There really is no toxic or potent smell to this solution, so you won't be overwhelmed by harsh fumes like when you are using paint thinners or brush cleaners. This is a commendable product, & I stick with what works. I have used this product for a long time now, & it never fails, not once.

This is not a free product review. I do recommend this product for removing paint and solvent based sealants from resin. I've been using Winsor & Newton Brush Cleaner & Restorer for several years. I like to buy this in the large 32 oz. bottle, which is a great value. This does a great job cleaning brushes, but I primarily use it to remove previous paint (faceups) jobs from my Asian Ball-Jointed Dolls (BJDs) which I paint and seal myself. I use Mr. Super Clear matte/flat to seal the resin followed by acrylic paint, watercolor pencils and chalk pastels, then seal over each layer of my work. Sometimes, I want to re-paint my dolls. Winsor & Newton Brush Cleaner & Restorer removes the sealant and all of my other products from the doll without doing any damage to the resin material. Nothing else works as well. Sometimes I also use a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser for stubborn spots aided by a tooth brush for small creases. Usually a cosmetic cotton pad works well. The left over residue washes away easily with water and scent-free and dye free dish soap. After this treatment, my dolls are left as clean as if they were just removed from the mold by their artist/maker. I also love Winsor & Newton Brush Cleaner & Restorer to clean my airbrush parts when I break them down for internal cleaning. Winsor & Newton Brush Cleaner & Restorer can be re-used, as I save my used product at times in a small glass jar. The used product works well for especially messy jobs as it sometimes takes a few washes with the product to remove the old paint. I have only one issue with Winsor & Newton Brush Cleaner & Restorer. It melts my gloves, leaving a bigger mess than what I had in the first place. I work in the medical field and frequently wash my hands. My hands are a little rough, even during the best of times. The chemical components of Winsor & Newton Brush Cleaner & Restorer (likely ethanol) dry out my hands even further to the point of serious discomfort. Every glove type I have available at home including nitrile and latex melt when they come into contact with Winsor & Newton Brush Cleaner & Restorer. I have reached out to the manufacturing company and asked a question on this listing for a glove material suggestion to wear, and have never had a response. This leaves me with the choice of doing further damage to my hands each time I use the product, or avoiding one of my favorite hobby-related activities. Neither choice makes me very happy. I would like very much to have a suggestion for a chemically compatible glove material to use in the future. Thanks for reading my review. Great brush cleaner. Brings brushes back to life. Low odor and good size bottle

>.. I use this in very small amounts, 10ml or less as a rule. It works wonders at removing dried acrylic paint from many surfaces. Sort of works on cloth, though not as thoroughly as it does on paint brushes. After machine washing and drying, I can reduce the paint on the cloth, but cannot remove it entirely. I suspect the dissolved paint enters the fibers and stays there. >.. BUT, fresh paint on cloth, dried paint but not previously machine washed and dried, dissolved completely the paint and by putting a cotton ball behind the paint, and using a cotton-tipped applicator with this solvent got the paint between the cotton, and the applicator leaving the cloth paint free! OUTSTANDING! >.. In addition, I have removed all the paint from some rocks that I had painted and was unhappy with. Draped a paper towel over the dried paint on the rock, poured a very small amount of the product over the rock, and allowed it to work over several hours. Then used a plastic scraper to clean off the paint, right down to the rock's surface, allowing me to reuse that rock. >.. Much as I hate to admit this, i do not always clean my brushes thoroughly. I make amends to those brushes by putting a small amount of this cleaner into a small plastic jar, and let the brush(es) soak over night, and then remove them for a thorough cleaning in the sink. The paint that had gathered at the point where the bristles are clamped by the metal ferrule now is ready to release the paint that was there. Dip, wait, clean; very easy and very simple.

Most brush cleaning products incorporate some form of paint thinner or soap to help break up dried paint and help it out of the brush tip. This product is not that. As far as I can tell, it’s a near-universal paint solvent. Whether oil or water-based, I have yet to find a pigment it will not purge with extreme prejudice. It’s even managed to eat through the Tamiya epoxy putty that was caked onto one of my old texture brushes. As such, I’m rather hesitant to soak my brushes in it for several hours as directed on the bottle. If you use this product as directed, I think there’s a pretty good chance you’ll damage or destroy your brushes. What this is excellent for, however, is to assist in cleanup after painting. Pouring some in a palette well and swirling my brushes in it for a few seconds between washes with soap and warm water has left my brushes cleaner than ever before, and as a bonus clears out all kinds of stubborn pigments from my palettes. If you’re looking for a mild or gentle brush cleaner, this is absolutely not for you and I honestly think it’s deceptive on the part of the sellers to market this as such. However, as a powerful all-purpose paint stripper you likely can’t do much better.

(See pictures) I had two purdy brand quality paint brushes that I’d used with a thick oil base black gel stain on our homes entrance door. Both brushes sat for weeks and I was going to throw them out but decided to see if I could save them. I read many reviews on mixtures and first tried low odor mineral spirits. They sat for days with no improvement. Then I tried this product and it worked overnight. A stiff nylon brush helped a great deal, then dawn soap and water. I just used one of the brushes for white latex pant and it worked excellent. I did try this product on hard latex paint. On a 2” Purdy brush it worked but on a 3.5” Purdy brush (using a stiff nylon brush again) it was too much paint inside the bristles and would take multiple cleanings (if it worked). Just wasn’t worth the hours it would take. Overall it’s an amazing product with a Very, very light smell. Would buy again!

Update Still very pleased with this brush cleaner and it’s still cleaning my brushes very well but wanted to let people know that not all the paint settles to the bottom, so the liquid, even at the top becomes like dirty dish water. It doesn’t clear. I haven’t found it a problem as I wipe my brush carefully before picking up new paint from my pallet and the residue is weak but be aware if you had expectations it would be clear at the top I wanted a non toxic way to clean my oil painting brushes. Oil and soap work but are slow. This WN brush cleaner is highly effective - fast and thorough. LOVE that it’s non toxic. I have it in a brush cleaning tin in my work area and can leave the lid off the whole time I am working without worrying about what I am inhaling. I don’t have and can’t set up an exhaust system where I work so this is a great solution. It has a mild smell which I only notice when I first open the container. It’s not inexpensive, but for me it’s worth avoiding toxic options and having a product that works very well Sooooo pleased

Hi Leute, ich hatte auf einem YT-Channel von dem Produkt gehört und wollte es nutzen, um die Citadel-Acryl-Farben aus meinen Pinseln zu bekommen. Die Farben waren teilweise monatelang angetrocknet und saßen bis tief vor der Zwinge. Den ersten Pinsel ließ ich rund 16 Stunden einweichen (in der Anleitung wird bis zu 24 Stunden empfohlen). Dann etwas umrühren, die Farbe blätterte ab, dann im Wasserglas reinigen und anschließend an der Küchenrolle abstreifen.. Das Resultat: leider geil! Die Borsten meiner Drybrush-Pinsel bogen sich vorher in alle Richtung, danach lagen sie wieder eng an -wie am ersten Tag. Ich wiederholte den Reinigungsprozess (ca. 5 weitere Minuten im Produkt) für den letzten Schliff. Leider hab ich keine Vorher-Nachher-Bilde gemacht. Einfach super. Bei den anderen Pinseln verkürzte ich die Zeit sukzessive. Je nach Schweregrad reichen auch 5, 10 oder 120 Minuten. In jedem Fall bin ich absolut zufrieden. Übrigens: Der Kundenservice des amerikanischen Unternehmens ist sehr gut. Das erste Päckchen wurde aufgrund eines Adressfehlers zurückgesendet. Ich nahm Kontakt auf - innerhalb eines Abends hatten wir alle Fragen geklärt, 10 Tage später kam es aus Übersee bei mir an. Klare Kaufempfehlung!

I am very happy with the product. It was so well packaged, with a specialised tape to hold the cap shut. This sort of thing is really important and I appreciate it! This brush cleaner is basically magical... Seriously.
