Bluetooth is Excellent
Yes, it works with Alexa! And quite easily! In fact, so easily, that when I tell my Echo Spot to play music, the Denon stereo turns on instantly. I upgraded to this receiver because I signed on to Amazon Music Unlimited on only ONE of my Echo Spots, the one that talks with this. I am not disappointed. The Denon comes with various sound "modes" for both TV and music, and that's really good. I had those on my old receiver, but these are better, and there are more of them. I skipped the part of the setup where the receiver automatically senses your speakers' volume levels. I wanted to increase the center speaker only, for better dialogue on TV. I called Customer Support, and I was done and happy in under 5 minutes. They are very good.At first, set up seemed intimidating, because you must set up the receiver to the TV and then follow on-screen commands. Also getting on the wi-fi seemed tough at first. But really, neither were. This box is full of features, but if you want to just use it at a basic level, no problem. That's what I'm doing, and I'm working my way up from there. It makes my old stereo system (surround) sound new again. My subwoofer is self powered, and its directions tell me to tell the receiver there IS NO subwoofer. Ok, I did that. No problem. It rocks.I have had Denon products before: a wonderful carousel CD player. So I felt confident buying from them. And they are still as good.TIPS: Before you get started, be certain that you have at least several HDMI cables. Hopefully, your TV has an HDMI ARC out. That really helps. An ethernet cable to your modem is the best way to get this on the wi-fi, so keep your modem/router near the TV and this box and hook them up physically. No sweat. Fast, and it really, really solidifies your network connection.Bottom Line: It is so multi-functioned and modern, that it seems intimidating at first, but actually this Denon is very user friendly. It sounds great! It has oodles of settings for music and TV playback. And . . . Alexa integrates so easily, it's embarrassing. Now I have the entire Amazon music catalogue at my fingertips in my living room. Priceless!

Great unit at a reasonable price!
Hooked it up to my 70 inch wall mounted Sharp Aquos. It wasn’t difficult at all to do. It works great and simple to use. I am severely hearing impaired and this unit has the power to overwhelm me with sound. I have 7 inexpensive 8 ohm speakers that I bought from a pawn shop. I can literally shake the pictures right off of the walls. Like my old Denon this one produces a lot of heat. I set this one on top of the entertainment center to hopefully prevent this unit from overheating the circuit boards and weakening solder joints. I’ve had it hooked up for about two months now and so far not one problem. Adding a center speaker to the far end of the living room where I sit enables me to keep the volume down so not to disturb anyone sleeping. I am very pleased with my purchase. For around $300.00 it’s sure hard to beat.

Nice receiver!
This receiver replaced a 17-year old Denon AVR-1801 receiver. Compared to the old one, it's great to have HDMI switching, Pandora, and AirPlay from my iPhone.I am using this receiver in a 2 zone setup. The main zone is 5.1 used with the TV in the living room. The 2nd zone drives a whole-house speaker system in the rest of the rooms of the house. Setup was very easy, although there were two different firmware upgrades required, each of which took several minutes. The receiver has worked perfectly with the exception of two unexplained disconnects from my wi-fi network. When this happens, the Speaker Setup menu is greyed out. In both cases, power-cycling the receiver fixed the problem. I contacted Denon support, and they are not aware of any similar issues, blamed it on a weak wi-fi signal, and suggested I use wired Ethernet. It sounds like a firmware bug to me.The HDMI i/p scaler (as well as the extra power) were the main reasons I picked this model over the less-expensive AVR-S730h, and it works very well. When watching 1080i video from my cable box on my Vizio M65-E0 4K TV, the picture looks noticeably sharper with the receiver doing the upscaling than if I let the TV do the upscaling itself. When playing stereo sound, the receiver stays pretty cool, but with all 7 channels playing at once, it gets very hot. I was able to use my older Denon receiver in a cabinet with the door closed, but with this new one, I feel like it is necessary to keep the door open. All in all, a nice receiver, and I recommend it.

Beautiful upgrade in its price class.
This was a replacement for a dead Onkyo TX-NR608 receiver, and what impressed me immediately was the sudden jump in clarity, especially through the subwoofer. The Onkyo had produced a very warm, saturated bass, but the Denon AVRS930H produced a tight, defined, focused bass that made loud subwoofer events much easier to follow through nuance. The most vivid example of this was the 7.1 audio track on the 2004 Special Edition of Star Wars -- yes, I have issues with the Special Edition, but it still remains one of my go-to 7.1 test discs -- in which, instead of hearing the low rumble of the Star Destroyer as a single chord, the subwoofer now articulated a slight pitch susseration of its engines, as it passed by. The Protector's action sequences also saw much cleaner speaker transitions, and an alarming clarity as the bullets whizzed past our heads, trackable with our ears. (I leaned hard, on reflex.)Levels setup was easy. While the first-time configuration script features the same sort of decent-function-paired-with-last-decade's-aesthetics you'd expect from a receiver under a grand, rest assured that under that dated black glass decor, the process works beautifully, and the Audyssey room correction routine does, too. I found the speaker connectors particularly accommodating of banana clips, easy to insert and remove, but unlikely to disconnect otherwise. The Eco mode is surprisingly unobtrusive, supplying power when needed and metering it back when it's not, and I found its detection of mode and channel number changes much faster and much more seamless than the Onkyo's had been.I'm really happy with this receiver, and it's taken heavy use since purchase like a champ.

Plenty of Functionality for the Dough
This replaced a 10 year old Denon AVR-789 (RIP), and I'm very glad I stayed with Denon for the replacement. If you have a relatively straightforward surround setup with a 'normal' number of devices, whatever that is these days, this receiver will serve you well. Plenty of HDMI ports (7, I believe), 2 monitor HDMI out, one being the all-important ARC, lots of speaker setup options and plenty of power pushed.Audessey setup is relatively painless, but as I've posted before, if you have back surround speakers, you must 'tell' the receiver they're present during setup to have power pushed to them. You'd think the darn thing would detect those, but that isn't the case. One nice option I'm using temporarily is that the setup will allow you to have only 1 back surround, and instructs you to plug it into the left back surround jack. That's pretty helpful if you're short of space or speakers for whatever reason. The quick start guide in the box will get you on life support, but I'd STRONGLY recommend using the preposterously large 275 page (!!!!) detailed smartPDF manual to really squeeze all the features out of the receiver. Yes, there's an app, but I found it slow, and just not as functional in pulling random how-to data out of the PDF. Another random plus for me, was this receiver was relatively shallow in footprint - since I had a small space to fit it into - plenty of room for the mass of cords that these things generate. For the money, I don't think you can go wrong. Sounds great, and plays nice with your other equipment.

Great features but incredibly bad support from Denon!
I am a 75 year old Audio and Videophile. I remember purchasing Audio Fidelity's Bull Fight Stereophonic Record in the late 1950's. I have owned Sony, Pioneer and Yamaha receivers which all worked flawlessly but as time passed were absent some of the new and developing features common in updated equipment. With the purchase of a new Samsung 4K HDR 65” TV, a receiver having both audio and HDMI video switching capability was needed in addition to the newest surround sound capabilities and online services. I had found the Audio Video Receiver (AVR) with all the features I wanted in the Denon AVR-S930H at a relatively inexpensive price on Amazon. I had remembered Denon as a good company that made solid and reliable audio products and the price on Amazon was unbeatable! In researching this AVR, it was noted that their “protection circuit” was sensitive and would be triggered by several irregularities (overheating, speaker shorts, etc.). However, it generally had good reviews, especially for the price. I decided that because I have years of experience of handling audio and visual equipment with great care, I could avoid reported problems and concerns. My saga begins.Upon receipt of the AVR, I noticed it had the same dimensions and weight of the Pioneer audio receiver it was replacing. I carefully connected my Bose Speaker system (5 double cube speakers connected to a large Acoustimass subwoofer). I connected 6 HDMI cables, a wired Ethernet to my router in my den, an FM antenna and an ARC connection to my TV. After going through the Setup and some minor adjustment, everything worked well. Sound was excellent and the 4K video with HDR was extraordinary (including upscalling). I played and tweaked with it for several days and had no problems. Until...One evening, the receiver clicked off and the Red LED power light started rapidly flashing. I shut system down, rebooted it and it again was working. The next morning however, the AVR shut down again (while still in cool state). But this time, rebooting was unsuccessful no mater how many times I tried. I would unplug unit, try again repeatedly with no success. I unplugged all speakers and cables and checked manual, online reviews, Youtube videos and found this is a common occurrence and a frustration of hundreds, if not thousands, of anguished customers. Known as the “flashing red light of death”, it required a unit tear down and replacing some capacitors and/or resistors. A task outside of my Warranty or my desire to engage.I contacted Amazon Tech Support and a nice lady walked me through some tasks to try but none worked. She then advised she would connect me to Denon Support but would remain on the line. Now the story becomes more incredible...A lady from Denon Support suggested I needed to reboot “both devices”. When asked to elaborate, she said I needed to reboot my router and my AVR. I explained I had rebooted the router earlier in the day and the AVR many times. She again insisted that I follow her instructions and where I was prepared to do so, she said they need to be rebooted at same time. I pointed out that the router was in my den (100 feet away) while the AVR was in my living room and that it was physically impossible for me to reboot both at same time. She became annoyed with me and questioned why my AVR would be in a different room then my router. She sounded as if she was challenging me. I explained that the center of my computer system was in my den while my media centers were in my Living Room and Family Room that were hard wired to my den. She then put me on hold. After a short period, she said something I couldn’t decipher but it was followed by silence. A short period after that, the lady from Amazon returned and explained in disbelief that the Denon Tech hung up on me and she was incredulous. She apologized profusely and explained she was confused not only in the Denon rep's rude and inappropriate response but her requirement of a simutaineous rebooting of the router and AVR. However, in typical excellent Amazon Service approach, she offered me a refund or replacement. I have been doing business with Amazon since the time they started as an online book seller. I have watched them grow and have relied on them for most of my purchases. They stand behind what they sell. My disappointment in Denon notwithstanding, Amazon came through with polite, efficient and sensitive staff with policies which protect and serves the customer.Lesson learned: trust Amazon but if you are going to buy a Denon product, you do so being forewarned that Denon products have built in faults and some of their support staff have even more.

Great option for a decent home theater
I got this to replace a competing brand (rhymes with "Schmonkyo") unit which was just full of workarounds and compromises to get it to function not very well. The Denon connected easily, set up and adjusted with no problems, and is doing excellent for my family's day to day use.The second zone powers my patio speakers, and I love being able to have two sources going at the same time.Spotify connect works well, with a little delay while the amp kicks in.Wifi connection and control are excellent since it's in a cabinet, and it responds to my Harmony Hub and Ultimate remote with no problems. It's not a zillion dollar high end system, but...I'm happy with it.

No HEOS rear wireless speakers for Surround Sound!
So very disappointed I cannot use HEOS 1 HS2 for Rear Surround sound. This was original reason for purchase when rumors were you could expect this for X or S..ending in H series. Turns out only HEOSAVR supports this option. Otherwise it has worked well for me with excellent support of DTS and other audio functions, though with hardwo. od floors I have never been able to enjoy 5.1. Sadly stuck with 3.1. Chose this over Sonos for DTS and advanced audio. I think Denon oversold many of us on what was possible with Heos wireless. The HEOSAVR has the key feature I was looking for, but is short on HDMI count and front side controls. I wanted 6 to 8 HDMI for ATV4K, XBox One 4K Blu-Ray, Roku Ultra, Switch, PC/Mac and other devices which the S930H supports very well. It has been awesome for Dolby Vision, HDR (High Dynamic Range) and 4K Scaling If I could do it over, value of Nakamichi Shockwafe Pro 7.1Ch DTS:X 600W 45-Inch Sound Bar with 8" Subwoofer (Wireless) & 2-Way Rear Surround Speakers is appealing or if $ not an issue perhaps Sony option.

Not quite 5 stars, but I won't argue
My 20 year old Sony receiver finally died a final death, and I quickly narrowed down my choice to Denon. This 930H is a 2017 model, was at the same price as current 2018 640H model, and comparing the 940H features to 930H, I don't feel I am missing $300 worth of value, so it was an excellent deal. Setup was very easy, unpack, plug things in, configure inputs and speakers, and go. The rest you adjust and tweak as you get used to the box.First off, the negatives, which are minor, relatively:- No phono input. I do have a non-amped record player, but I already have a device to play it through, so it is not a big miss. It would have been a very nice option to have this. I believe the new 940H does have it.- No analog->digital video converter. If you have analog (RCA) video inputs, you must run an analog video out to your display. This was mildly upsetting when I found out, because I misread the spec sheet and believed I would get it. A minor inconvenience that requires me to switch video inputs on my TV for the infrequent times I use analog sources.- Sleep mode depends on inputs, not outputs. Receiver will not go into sleep mode when I turn off the TV, only when I turn off the input source. This is kind of a big deal, because it will continue to run at full power and it does get hot after a while. I know often people run a receiver in audio-only mode, but it should be an option.- Receiver runs lots of software (not silicon) and it shows. There are periodic, but very rare, bugs and interface freezes that require a power cycle to reset.- No analog audio outputs, except for 1/4 inch headphone jack and (obviously) speakers. This may be a limitation due to HDMI copy protection requirements? There is RCA and component video out, but no audio.Positives:- Nearly every input is assignable. That means you can mix and match all the video and audio inputs to create your own modes. Want video from HDMI 2/DVD and audio from Optical 1/TV? No problem. Once you setup the modes, there is no need to fiddle with any of the settings. Only downside is of course the remote labels do not change when you rename them on the receiver..- Nearly every aspect of the receiver can be operated from the mobile app, as long as both are on the same wifi network.- Having built-in internet radio streaming is nice. It uses the TuneIn app, so you have a huge selection of stations. Unfortunately, there is no way to tie your HEOS account to your TuneIn account, so your favorites do not carry over.- Receiver can act as a Bluetooth sound device, so pair your phone or tablet and play any sounds through your stereo.- There are lots of HDMI inputs, and as nearly everything these days uses HDMI, this is great. There are also two optical and 4 RCA audio inputs. This is a two zone receiver, and while admittedly I don't need this feature and did not set it up, it looks very confusing to configure and get working.Long term edit (7 months): still working great. There have been 2 software updates available for the box in the mean time, so there is still some active development happening by Denon. The freezes are down to basically nothing, I don't even remember the last time anything happened. For the analog video issue, I ended up buying a USB powered RCA-HDMI converter box. For the sleep mode, I'm just used to manually turning off the receiver. Of course, if you have a universal remote, or a newer smart TV, this can be easily managed automatically. No complaints, very happy with the purchase. I would hope newer models are even better.

Best value for the money
My old Yamaha receiver only had 2 HDMI ports and the output died. It still plays but I had to move cables around to play different devices. I compared the S940H and the S930H and couldn't justify the $200 difference. I control the unit with my Harmony remote and it's fabulous, the separation of the channels are amazing especially with Netflix and even with shows that are not true surround this receiver does a great job in making it seem like it does. Take your time in learning the app because you can do everything that the remote does, don't listen to the whiners who just like to complain.

This is one very good unit!
This is a very good AVR unit. We purchased it to replace an older (7 year) Denon unit ( which still works fine). Aside from all the new features this unit is super easy to program, thanks to the TV on screen program menus. The old unit had a complex remote unit while the AVR S930H’s remote offers intuitive menus making set up so straight forward. The Audrssey feature allows very easy calibration to your specific listening environment. It also offers an‘ARC’ communications channel over HDMI cables should one not be using cable or satellite signals. Having HEOS is fine for using second room Bluetooth communications, but not a reason to purchase this AVR. If you believe that Dolby ATMOS, is a future innovation in movies this receiver works very well ! Connecting the unit by Ethernet is also a great way to go as upgrades happen effortlessly. So what is any downsides to the unit? Well it may be price. Yet watch for sales ad they do happen. .
