Is this playable in the car if I just put Wav audio files on it?

I haven't tried doing that, but I don't see any reason why they wouldn't. These type of disc (M-Disc) are a little pricey for storing music and you might be better just using regular DVD's. I would suggest making several copies of the discs you play in your car and keep the duplicates elsewhere. My experience with those that I have used in my car tend to get worn out after a year or two. Plus it can get hot in summer in the car which can't be good for them.

Are these only 4.7 GB? Can that really store 8,000 photos?

The regular DVDs are only 4.7 GB. The number of images that you can store depends on the size of the files. I am storing images at 150 to 170 MB. If you store small images such as 500K, you would get a lot more images on the disk. If you really need a larger size then you have to go to Blue-Ray technology, which means a BR scanner and a BR-capable reader. Blue Ray MB disks come in 25 GB and 100 GB sizes, but again you must be Blue-Ray capable to use BD-R disks.

Will these work with any disc writer?

The disc writer needs to be rated for M-Disc. That being said, many modern writers are so it depends on how old it is. It should say in the specs on the manufacturer’s website or manual.
