OMT Ball Joint Press Kit, Ball Joint Removal Tool with 4x4 Adapters

I don't know much about this product but I do give it a five star review. My husband asked me to order this. I know he and s friend have used it a few times and I've heard no complaints and it survived 😄

I have an 03 Ram 3500 with a 6” lift and 37” tires on 17” rims. I say this so you know, this truck has seen some rough times. I tried going the rented route from both autozone and oreillys auto parts. These presses were okay, but ultimately used and poorly maintained. I actually sheared the threads off of the ball joint press from autozone. Got my money back, no problem. Then, after being mad as heck over how hard it was to get my ball joints out (7 hours of tear apart) I decided, I’m probably going to have to do this again in a few years so I may as well have my own press. This press came in in about 5 days, which with the COVID impact on shipping was great! And still better and faster than expected. This had all of the cups I needed to install the ball joints. The only issue I had was the threads got heated and started to bur up pretty bad, and after breaking 4 1/2” drive breaker bars (I never said we were smart) we decided to do some investigating. With a couple brushes of some anti-seize and running it in and out a few times (I highly recommend an impact, even though it suggests not using one) the press worked like a dream. Came to the realization that most of the broken tools were from fighting the ball joint press itself and not the actual ball joint. I highly recommend this product to anybody that is working with ball joints, and even though it says it’s for up to 3/4 ton trucks, it will handle a 1 ton with no issue. Again I will stress what other people have said... USE OIL OR SOME ANTI-SEIZE ON THE THREADS!! That is the only reason I gave this a 4 star for durability, though honestly it was probably some operator error. This is significantly cheaper than a press you can get in stores, and does the job very well. I would recommend to pretty much anybody and have already had people asking to borrow it when I’m done.

This works great and has held up to very high torque needed to remove some u-joints. My only complaint is the ball bearing under the driver head falls out. The driver falls out too and when it does the ball bearing drops out. Easy enough to drop back in place, but I've almost lost it a couple times. Magnetic ball would help a lot.

Great and very strong for the money. People leaving reviews saying it was weak or something must not know how to use it. Popped out thirty year old Ford ball joints like butter.

Until I purchased this tool I have just borrowed them, which you can do at most major auto parts stores for free - well as long as you are making some kind of purchase. I have done a lot of front end work and will probably do more so decided to just get my own tool. This one is very similar to the ones I have borrowed although a bit smaller, meaning a few less adapters. But for my 2010 F150 it had what I needed and would have been fine with the other 20 or so jobs I have done over my lifetime. It's well made with solid components including the heavy duty press and should work well for most applications. Comes in a nice form fitting case so you'll know if a part is missing. I can definitely recommend this for someone who plans to do a lot of front end work in the future. But if it's just for one job, I recommend renting one. That said, there are a few "tricks" to using one of these and probably making is a bit of a challenge for someone not accustom to removing and replacing ball joints. If it's your first time using one of these here are a few tips. For one, these tools are much better and made more for installing ball joints than removing them. If you are using it to remove a ball joint make sure to remove the snap ring (if there is one) and spray the joint well with penetrating oil. I recommend doing this a few hours before starting the removal if not overnight. Also, before using the tool to remove the ball joint, use a small but heavy hammer first. Brace up the arm so there is no give and give it a few good wacks, then spray it again. You won't hurt the frame so don't worry about that. Just make sure to hit the joint flat so as not to make a dent near the edge which might cause a hang up. Repeat this a few times and you might be surprised that it comes out just doing this versus trying to press it out. I have hammered out more than I have pressed out by a wide margin. At the very least it will loosen it up a bit before you use the press. If you do need to press it out, stop now and then as you tighten it down and give it a few more wacks with the hammer. If it's real stubborn, you might need to apply a little heat to the frame - not the ball joint. Again, you won't hurt anything heating it up so get it good and hot. Just keep clear of any rubber bushing or wiring nearby. Use a breaker bar with a socket to apply the needed pressure but noting more than that. If you need to use a pipe to extend the length of the bar to apply more pressure, you could and probably will, bend the tool. You need to be patient, tighten, spray, heat, wack with hammer - repeat. It will come lose. Installing the new ball joint is the tricky part and where most first timers run into trouble. You want to clean the hole out with a wire brush and apply a thin film of grease. Then figure out what combinations of adapter are needed to install the ball joint based on the design. Again though, you should not need anything more than a breaker bar to apply the needed pressure. It is possible for the ball joint to get cocked in the the hole, but pretty unlikely. If the tool is setup properly, the ball joint will pretty much self-center as there is normally a slight tapper. Install the new snap ring and that's it. Hope this helps a little. There are also quite a few You Tube videos on using the tool, although some are not that good so keep these tips in mind. This ball joint press worked excellent. My Chevrolet fought the whole time and did a lot of damage to the cups and adapters. The material is a high-quality, but it was under a lot of stress while using it. The ball joints that were removed or the original factory I believe it took forever to remove them, but once it broke loose, everything was great came right out. However, I can see the cup two adapters are badly damaged. Is there anyway that I can buy these three separate pieces or would it be cheaper to buy another kit?

Almost worked for putting ball joints in my truck but the aluminum clamp bows too much for it to actually provide enough pressure

Well packaged and good quality. Removed my ball joints in only a few minutes. Just make sure everything is squared up before putting pressure on. 1/2 inch drive sockets can be used if you can’t find exact cup to re install ball joints….

Trés solide 8kg tout de même et bien utile car sans cet appareil je ne sortais pas mes rotules et encore moins de les remettre, attention les 2 flasques multi fonction sont un peu tendre et donc pas en métal dur , mais fait le job

I’m a big fan of OMT tools. I have a bearing press, and a disc brake tool and the quality of both is great. That’s why when I needed a ball joint tool I went to with OMT. I know a case doesn’t do much, but it does speak to the quality and attention to detail a company has for their tools. I previously ordered a slightly cheaper set, and immediately sent it back. When I unboxed the cheaper set right away I knew I’d be disappointed. The case was laughably thin, I knew it wouldn’t last a month, at least not in my shop. Secondly the tool set inside was flimsy, with a cheap painted coating. I could tell it was of inferior quality. I had a ball joint to press out of the control arm for my GMC 2500, and that set wouldn’t have touched it. The OMT set pressed it out, no problems. It did take some fiddling to get the right size cups etc, but it worked great. Just make sure you coat the threads with anti-seize to help prevent galling.
