The lids, when clear, do not leak ( but I have never tried to turn them sideways). After freezing, some ice builds up in the lid channels and this can cause them to sit crooked, causing leakage. I just make sure to rinse the ice off before putting them on the trays and into the freezer.

I didn’t do it and they worked fine. Mine were not toxic.
