Ikram Hawramani's 10,000 Names for Muslim Babies is the definitive English-language baby name book for Muslims. The book is the result of five years of research into names acceptable for use by Muslims. Great care has been taken to ensure the correctness of the meanings provided; all meanings have been validated across various dictionaries and references, such as Taj al-Lughah wa Sihaah al-Arabiyyah by Isma`eel bin Hammad al-Jawhari (11th century CE), Lisaan al-Arab by Ibn Manzur (14th century), al-Qamoos al-Muheet by Fairuzabadi (15th century), and contemporary sources such as the Loghatnameh of Dehkhoda, the Sultan Qaboos Encyclopedia of Arab Names, and the Oxford Dictionary of First Names.Besides providing meanings, variant spellings of the names and the occasional historical note are provided. A note is provided for names that are mentioned in the Qur'an (Quranic baby names). For Western converts to Islam wishing to preserve their cultural traditions, hundreds of European names are provided whose meanings are acceptable according to Islamic criteria. The total count of the names is more than 10,000, partly due to the fact that a name can belong to multiple languages, and partly because the actual number of names is more than 10,000. The book would be more accurately titled as "More Than 10,000 Names for Muslim Babies", but this was considered unnecessarily pedantic. The book includes baby names from the following languages, cultures and sources:Arabic (10801 names)Persian (2045 names)English (773 names)Kurdish (197 names)German (170 names)Turkish (166 names)Italian (145 names)French (120 names)Spanish (108 names)Urdu (103 names)Russian (86 names)Irish (84 names)Scandinavian (81 names)Scottish (76 names)Polish (52)Welsh (50)Biblical (45)Portuguese (39 names)Dutch (36 names)Czech (29 names)Latin (28 names)Danish (28 names)Swedish (26 names)Finnish (22 names)Hebrew (21 names)Irish Gaelic (11 names)Scottish Gaelic (11 names) Review: Five Stars - Got our name really easily Review: Helped me name my daughter - Itโs a good book, a lot of names and meanings!

Disappointing
Unfortunately, not a lot of care seems to have been given to this book (back cover with spelling mistakes and text ending with an unfinished sentence cut in the middle). The books claims there are more than 10 000 names listed when there are actually arround 6800 names. I was also disappointed that arabic names don't come with arabic spelling at all: this makes checking for the exact pronunciation difficult. I also did not found it very handy that boys and girls names are listed separately the way it is. For exemple, names for both gender will be listed twice, without the book specifying if a name is for both boys and girls: you would need to look into the other gender section to check if the name is also listed to make sure. I liked the fact that the origin of the name is specified (arabic, persian, etc.) but there were too many western names for my use. Although if you are specifically looking for western names allowed in Islam this book would be a good ressource. Overall I was rather disappointed by this book, specially when the author also owns a website for muslim names of great quality. I was expecting this book to be even more complete than the website and that is one of the reasons which made me buy it. Unfortunately, the website is actually much better, more complete, and does not have the issues that I noticed in the book (names for both gender specified, arabic spelling provided and for quranic names the ayah where the name is cited is also shown). I don't recommend this book unless your are specifically looking for western names allowed in Islam.
