SeaSense SAFETY BLASTER

Great signaling device! Easy to use. So loud, I almost need earplugs when blowing it full out. HOwever, it is also easy to regulate how loud by how much you blow into the device. It is super easy, however, to blow it its loudest. It does not sound like a regular whistle, which is a very high-pitched sound. The sound is not as high, making it more audible in certain situations. It does have the tone and audible range of a duck call, but is does not sound like a duck call. It has a more steady sound like a whistle, but again, slightly lower-pitched . It is larger than I expected...about the size of a small air-horn....it makes carrying more bundle-some but makes handling easier. It is more dependable than an air-horn in that it cannot run out of air when you need it most. Love the color....it is a beautiful blue! The lanyard could definitely be longer....it is too short (my only criticism). The other reviewers said it didn't work at first because they were blowing in the wrong place, but the device is (just now? or always has been?) clearly marked right on it how to use, as pictured in my 2nd image provided. The first image should give you an idea of the size of the device since I shot it in my hand. Overall, it was just what I was looking for in my particular applications: 1. a loud signal while hiking to scare off unwanted wildlife (bears and mountain lions), 2, a loud signal to ward off loose dogs while urban walking, 3. an emergency signal for both urban and wilderness, 4. an emergency signal for when I am volunteering in my local animal shelter. I always worried about the air-horns for this because I have had them fail and also run out of air. This is so much better than all the emergency whistles I have purchased and much better than an air horn. Thanks!

After learning about the existence of these human-powered, kazoo-like horns I bought three different kinds. From high to low price: the "Attwood Bellow Signal Horn", the "SeaSense Safety Blaster Horn", and the "Coghlan's Emergency Survival Horn". All allow you to simply blow to make a loud, kazoo-like sound. All allow you to replace the vibrating membrane with any thin sheet of plastic (such as plastic wrap). All are made of hard plastic and should be impervious to water damage, although the Coughland is made of a cheaper, more brittle plastic, while the SeaSense is of a more robust plastic, with the Atwood in between. In loudness, the Coughland was the softest, while the SeaSense and Atwood seemed equally very loud. It was easy with the Atwood to blow softer or harder to make the sound quieter or louder -- not so easy with the others. In pitch, the Coughland was the lowest, the Atwood in the middle and the SeaSense was the highest. Uniquely, the SeaSense can easily be configured to produce three different pitches -- which might make a difference depending upon the context (e.g. on open water vs in a forest or in a mountain valley). In size, the Coughland and SeaSense were about equal and could if needed fit into most pockets, the Atwood was two to three times as large. In price, the Atwood was three times the price of the other two. The Coughland and SeaSense both emit sound to the left and right (near your ears). Cupping your hands behind the left & right ends shield your ears a little from the loudness. The Atwood emits sound forward and away from you, which helps a little. All of them will be loud to your ears no matter what you do.

This product is supposed to be a loud safety horn for boating. I was going to use it in my classroom as an "attention getter". It sounds more like a tweet. I even had my husband {a pro boater} to try it, with no luck getting it to work. It doesn't cost much but don't risk buying it, for any reason, thinking you will get the one that works perfectly like I did... It will just make you mad!!!!!!!!!!!!

My dog and I had a narrow escape from being attacked by a larger dog. I bought the horn in response to that. I was looking for something lightweight and less severe than pepper spray. The horn just arrived today and I'm thinking it should be loud enough to scare away most threatening dogs. But I'm still going to carry a big walking stick, just in case. And there is NO way that this sound could be heard from a mile away. It sounds like a loud duck call - nothing that would alert me to possible problems nearby. More of a "what the heck was that noise?" type of noise.

I bought this to keep with us in a summer cottage we own in the country where there is a high prevalence of black bears that are sometimes bold enough to walk right in and see what's in the fridge. I wanted something I could use in case of emergency to scare away wildlife. This is a small, plastic item that can be tucked away in a pocket or hung around your neck (or attached to your dog's leash - which we will do). It is the right size so that it is easy to have around when you need it. Air horns seemed too big, clunky and expensive and this seemed like a good portable alternative. It is *very* loud, which is good and bad. It's good for its stated purpose. It's bad because it's mere inches away from your own ears when you blow into it. I would say this would only be used in an extreme emergency, which is okay for me. And you can't really blow it fully because I suspect you might damage your own hearing if you did. I didn't give it 5 stars because there are no directions on how to use it. We had to Google to find out how to remove the plastic shield and use it - you blow through the small hole on the side, not through the end which you might think when you first see it. For the price and the form factor/size I think it's a great product to have around in case of emergency. It's also a great option considering the other products and prices in this category.

Bought this because of how often drivers just aren't paying attention to pedestrians. I can't tell you how many times I've been halfway through a crosswalk and some distracted, in a hurry driver decides to go. What's so crazy is that they often never even notice how close they've come to running me down! Secondly, I bought this because of the shouters. You know them, the dudes, sometimes, though it's rare, it's women, who shout from cars at pedestrians and cyclists. I don't know why this do this or what they hope to gain from it, but I've had a ton of insults screamed at me from speeding cars and I'd like to give them a loud little blast back when I can. Maybe it will make them think twice about yelling, probably not, but it makes me feel better to feel like I am doing something to counter the crazy. This blaster horn is really loud. Much louder than the metal whistle I used to carry. It is pretty lightweight and is the perfect size to carry on a lanyard around your neck while walking, biking or whatever. The only problem is unlike a whistle that you can use repeatedly without hands, you have to hold this horn up to your mouth to use it, but the sound level is so much higher so, to me, it's worth it.

I bought this to have on my boat and kayaking if I need help. OK, let me say: THIS IS VERY VERY LOUD! The sound will travel a very long distance! I've used to get fellow kayakers that are way way ahead of me to slow down on rivers or to let friends kayaking across large lakes to know where I'm at. I've used to get my hunting dogs attention when he's out in the field (53 acres) and refuses to listen! I scared my friend almost to death after he said: it can't be that loud! Well, he peed his pants! I tried it while kayaking in east Texas with gators in the water that get a little to close. The gators leave fast! Becareful using it! People around you will not find it funny, if they think you're in trouble. I have ordered a couple more for my eldery father who likes to boat and fish alone to put on his boats.

I'm not sure why folks have a problem with this as it is so very loud. Blew into the side hole, just a little bit and the dogs ran off! Maybe twist the 2 pieces and separate them right out of the package, put them back together again and see if that makes a difference. I have used these out in the wilds of Alaska to alert distant bears. They have always looked up and gone in the opposite direction. Seriously folks, these things are LOUD if used right.

bought it as an emergency sounder, but I think it works just as well at sporting events, may not last a long time as it's not the most expensive item, but it does what I wanted and hopefully will last longer than expected the volume surprizes people when you give it a blast and that's what it's supposed to do

It just didn't work.

It’s super loud but a terrible design. The hole you have to blow in to make the sound makes the unit far to close to your ears making it unbearable to use. Will definitely damage hearing with prolonged use.

Could be LOUDER

What a simple idea - just blow - and it makes an enormous sound. I bought it because we have tons of bears on our trails in spring and fall. Not sure if I'd have the presence of mind to actually blow the thing if I was in the presence of a bear - but it offers some peace of mind while out there - and that counts for something. Sure beats having bear bells on - which make a trek in the woods way too loud for my tastes.
