Sangoma S500 Mid Level Phone

Ok, feels a little cheap
This is a very decent phone with decent features. Overall I like it, but there are a few things that feel a little bit cheap. Particularly the rubber feet on the bottom, they seem to fall off pretty easily, and the general feel of the phone isn’t real sturdy, I’m not super pleased with the tactile feel of the buttons either. It is a fine phone, but I prefer yealink

A whole lot of dissapointment.
Using FreePBX and tried switching off to this phone since it touted very easy setup and was essentially sponsored by FreePBX (Sangoma). I used Cisco phones before trying the switch which used a simple browser based setup and straight forward credential type authentication. Tried following the setup steps for this phone listed for this phone. After really obscure and overly complicated instructions with way too many steps to be considered "easy"... I gave up. I tried logging into the web browser and also the phones admin setting but the default credentials didn't even work -- this is after a factory reset. BY NO MEANS is this an easy setup. I'm sure once it gets tied into the system End Point Manager makes maintenance and modification pretty straightforward and easy. Just getting there seems ridiculous. Will be giving it another try but I suspect at this point I'll be returning it. I expected a whole lot more out of a phone this is basically designed to work with FreePBX.The build quality also seems a bit outdated. While the color tone looks modern the feel is not what I expect from a traditional modern office phone. It feels more like what I used back in the analog PBX era 10 years ago. Maybe I'm just spoiled with what other competitors are putting out. Admittedly the competition is typically a bit more expensive.

Why would you ever use anything else?
WOW! That is the best way I can start this review. I have spent over 20 years in the IT industry and have worked with phones almost that entire time. During all those years in the industry I have never used a phone that had such amazing audio quality especially on speaker phone. After setting up the phone (more on this in a min) I made a few calls and when I told people I was using the speaker phone and they could not believe it, in fact after using the phone for several weeks now and not a single person has had issues hearing me.When it comes to setting up this phone I can only speak for FreePBX but what an amazingly simple process. I have started ordering these phones for my clients and it has saved me a lot of money and time not having to ship them to my office first for configuration, then to the client site for installation. Once I have the MAC ID of the phone, I can login to my Sangoma portal, assign the phone to a deployment, and make sure that the clients PBX has a End Point Manager profile setup for the phone and BOOM! just like that the phone connects, reboots a couple of times and is completely provisioned and ready to roll. With the quality of this product, the simplicity of the install, and the price of all three Sangoma phone models, I have no idea why you would use or offer anything else. My company has made that decision and we could not be happier. Thank you Sangoma for providing us with better margins, saving us many hours of man hours per deployment, and making us look great to our clients.

very poor quality control
very poor quality control. ordered over 10 of these, 3 where DOA (dead on arrival) with different parts not working. replaced 3 of those, 1 more DOE from replacements. just frustrating. one unit of 10 stopped working after 6 months, bought replacement, DOA bought another one. buttons are stiff, feels cheap. if you are thinking to replace your office phone, look for something better. it might be cheap'ish but if your employees dial a lot, it will be frustrating for everybody.

Voice quality was okay. Compared to the Polycom VVX411 the Sangoma S500 phone quality is not nearly as good. FreePBX 13 endpoint manager works well with this Sangoma phone.

The worst phone and the worst customer support
We have received the absolute worst customer service from Sagoma and SIP station. Constant 24-48 hour downtime with zero apologies. They actually told us to call our number daily to make sure it was working! Phones are cheap hollow quality to boot. After 6 years of abuse we have switched to Ring Central and it is by far our best decision to date. We went with their T48s and T46s phones and overall ended up saving around 25%. Phone quality is awesome as is the service to this point.Do not put your company through these types of headaches! Avoid Sangoma products and SIPStation services at all costs.

Five Stars
As good as Mitel Aastra, and on HD the sound is amazing!

Fails to provide basic phone functionality (with G722), Integrates well with FreePBX
These phones have terrible handset gain control. When someone slightly raises their voice it's like they are shouting into the handset - it gets staticky/crackly. I have deployed 25 of these at two locations with two separate versions of FreePBX (13/14) and both have the same issue. We even used basefile edits to turn down the send volume with little effect. Polycom, Cisco and Yealink sets don't have the problem on these same systems. Posting in the forums resulted in a snarky response, basically stating we've sold thousands of phones and you are the first to complain.Sure they integrate really well with FreePBX but they fail to provide BASIC phone functionality. I avoid Sangoma phones and have recently started using Yealinks with great results.*** Update ***After working with Sangoma support for 3 weeks, having them remote into our system for PCAPs, submitting 15+ call examples, and not getting very far, we ended up moving from G722 to G711/ULAW which stopped the loud-talker issue mentioned above. I will add a star as the phones are functioning better. However they are advertised as HD audio/G722 capable, but have major issues in this regard.I still won't be buying any Sangoma product, other than FreePBX extensions from here on out.
