How loud do you need it? Not sure how to answer. But, for use as an instrument with kids, it is perfect and continues ringing for a short while. I put a rubber ball on the end of the stick to hit it with to get a less clangy sound and it will vibrate nicely.

what does it sound like?

It's a very kind of high sounding ting sound, but still with the resonance of a gong, if that makes any sense. I bought it because I was judging a storytelling contest and the size and quality were suited for my purposes. I guess if you need that hollywood "gong" sound, you should get something a little nicer
