Really Works - Highly Recommend
I purchased this device almost 2 years ago because I would get cold sores on my outer lips which were very painful as well as embarrassing. I was somewhat skeptical that this device would actually work, but I was at the onset of an outbreak so I ordered this device. It arrived a few days later, but my outbreak had already started. So I used it to see if it would help reduce the duration. It did seem to stop the outbreak mid stream and I healed sooner. I then had 2 subsequent eruptions within the first 6 months of owning this device, so I applied this device at the first start of the tingling sensations and both times it stopped it completely cold before any eruption. I then decided to start using it preventatively and used it on all my lips 3 times a day for about 2 weeks and then I stopped. I have not had any eruptions at all (zero, nada) in the last 18 months. Normally I would have outbreaks at least once every three months. I would especially have outbreaks during cold seasons or after being exposed to someone with a cold. I have had no outbreaks. This device seems to have killed the virus that was in my lip tissue. I contracted HSV-1 when I was 18 from a Dentist office that had not sterilized the dental instruments thoroughly. Because I contracted HSV-1 at such a late age, my outbreaks were more severe than if you contracted it when a child. I am pleased to say that this device absolutely worked for me and I would highly recommend it. Result may vary with each person, but I would recommend that when using it treat all of your exposed lip tissue. It takes a little longer but it seemed to work for me. I would just use it when watching TV. The device would cover about 50% of my mouth so only about 10 to 15 minutes to use it. I hope others find this device to be effective and useful and obtain relief. Update 12/6/2020 - Started to have an outbreak for the first time since purchasing this device. It's flu season so, I must have come in contact with some type of virus which always triggers my HSV-1. The tingling was starting in several places on my lips, which means this was going to be a very serious outbreak. I grabbed my ViruLite device and tried to use it, but the battery was dead since I had not used in in about 1.5 years. In inserted a new battery and it was ready to go. I immediately applied it across all my lips surface. That was last night before bed. Woke up this morning 95% of spots that were tingling have stopped. One area is still slightly tingling just applied again across all of my lips. All tingling has stopped and no signs of active outbreak. It has stopped this outbreak in its tracks again. This things really works. I have not had any actual outbreaks now in almost 3 years except for this most recent early stage eruption. But again I repeat it stopped the outbreak within less than 12 hours. I have not had to use any supplemental medications in 3 years only this device. I will use the device for the next few days preventatively to kill the virus that must be active my lip tissue again. It works purchase and try it. If it doesn't work for your then return in under the Amazon return policy. If I ever need to repurchase this device I would absolutely 100% repurchase without hesitation.

Defective device received-annoyed that I am now waiting on replacement
2/15/19 Update: got the replacement today and it’s the same. Green blinking light but no light when flashing cell flash light. Tried calling the customer service number and it went to voicemail. I messaged them through their site this afternoon and haven’t heard back. Will update if i hear back -still not sure if it’s a defect that i got or this is how it is supposed to be. Pretty annoyed right now. Got it today and it is defective. There’s no laser light that goes on when it is flashing and beeping. Yes, i used my cell phome flashlight to check. Now i have to wait 2 more days to use it. I’ve read other reviews and have a feeling that the reason why this is only a 4 star product is because people are getting defective devices-so of course it doesn’t work. Luckily i went to a dentist around the area and they were able to perform a laser procedure on my cold sore. Mynoutbreak happened Sunday morning so the office wasn’t open but I went in Monday morning. It was very brief and you feel some warm heat. It is now Wednesday and it has healed dramatically from that one dental laser procedure. They said it would heal in a few days and i was skeptical but they’re right! I highly recommend you research your area’s dentists to see if they do this. It was only $70 and in some cases the cold sores don’t return. In the case of this product, for something this expensive you would think that there would be a better system of quality control in the manufacturing process. My cold sore has healed dramatically but it is still there and i was hoping to use this to give it more of a nudge before Valentine’s day but now i have to wait.

Two Months Later...Still Five Stars!!!
Original Review (2/15/17) - Yes, I agree with Sarah, this actually does seem to work!!!! First Update (3/12/17) - Now that nearly a month has passed since my initial brief review of this amazing little gadget, I'm popping on to add an update to say it's continuing to work great! I'm someone who for years has had cold sores in one particlular area of my upper lip; practically always there's a blister either forming or in one stage or another of healing. When I first got my Virulite at the beginning of February 2017, I of course had one of my usual cold sores. I used my Virulite twice per day like the instructions say, and that cold sore immediately stopped hurting and sped through the healing process in half or less the usual amount of time. Since then, because of my history of almost always having an active cold sore in that area, I've been using my Virulite once per day as a preventative measure, even though this isn't mentioned in the directions. Amazingly, I have had ZERO cold sores appear while doing this (a bit of pre-sore tingle now and then, but absolutely NOTHING has developed during the past month which is pretty much a MIRACLE for me!). So, I HIGHLY recommend this product to anyone who suffers from cold sores, either occassionally or especially, like me, frequently/continuously. As far as build-quality, it seems quite sturdy to me. You actually can't see the light it emits on your skin (it's outside the visible spectrum) so you have to take it on faith something is actually coming out, but if you are like me the benefit it brings your skin will confirm that it is actually doing what it claims to do. My only suggestions for improvement would be that it should come with a case and have recharging capability. I have been using a spare glasses case to put it in which I think will be helpful when I want to take it with me on trips. The glasses case is about the right size, but it would be nice if the manufacturer included an even better fitting case to keep it from jostling around when transporting it. Also, it would be great if it had a built-in rechargeable battery so it could simply be plugged in or put on a charging base like an electric toothbrush. As it is, it takes 9-volt batteries, and the directions specify alkaline ones (i.e., not re-chargable ones). I've probably used my Virulite 40 - 50 times so far, and it's still going on the original battery so it seems like it won't be too expensive from a battery replacement perspective (and Amazon does have good deals on 9-volt batteries). Also, it's simple to get to the battery so replacing it will be easy when the time comes, but still a rechargable version (along with a carry case) would make this great little gizmo perfect! I hope this updated review is helpful for those of you considering purchasing one of these. It's actually my one and only product review in all my years of using Amazon - that's how much I adore my Virulite! :-) And note, that's a smile emoji without a cold sore on its lip!!! Second Update (4/17/17) - A quick two-month update...still loving my Virulite! I'm now using it every other day or so as a preventative measure. I still get a pre-blister lip tingle from time to time, but a quick zap with the Virulite keeps the break-outs at bay. The battery did finally konk out about two weeks ago, but that was after more than 50 uses so no complaints from me about it being a battery hog. Also replacing the battery was super quick and easy. That said, if the manufacturer of this device happens to read this review, I still think a rechargable version of this device would be great! All in all, I'm still really pleased with this product and highly recommend it!

Actually Works! Worth the Money.
Hold the press! This thing actually works. It cut my healing time in half. After suffering from cold sores since I was five, I've finally found something that speeds healing time. I was just getting over a recent sore, when what should happen but another popped up. (The first one took a solid 14 days, even though I was extra cautious and used q-tips, alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, and Abreva.) I have not had more than 1 cold sore at a time in 20 years, at least. So when that second bugger popped up just as the other was starting to heal, I freaked. I mean, people were giving me dirty looks wherever I went. Humiliating. I started looking for ANYTHING that might work, and by God's grace, Virulite showed up on Google. After reading the case study and doing extra research on the science of the process, I purchased it. Two days later, it was in my mailbox and then over my sore. Obviously, by the time I was able to start using it, a VERY painful, very OBVIOUS blister had formed. After just one treatment, the pain was gone and didn't return. After three treatments, the blister started to shrink. I will admit, my blister was ripped off three times by accident, slowing the healing process down. However, that notwithstanding, my blister was gone in seven days. THAT IS HUGE! I believe that when my next sore comes along, this device will cut my healing time to an even shorter duration that what I've had because I'll have in hand immediately and won't have to wait for the arrival. This is worth every penny because it is reusable and doesn't have an expiration date. Just an FYI before Virulite showed up, I'd had, at least, one cold sore on my mouth for 16 consecutive days and was expecting to endure another 12-14 days of misery and humiliation. Thanks to Virulite that time was drastically cut.

Quality control!
Got it for my wife 4-5 years ago, she loves it and finally let me buy a new one. When she first received it the lights were crooked. She emailed and they said to mail it back in exchange for a new one and a protective case. They never offered so we paid for the shipping for the exchange which is totally fine. When she got the newly exchanged one — the battery is easy to slip out. She was informed the battery in it is a little longer for some reasons so change batteries and try? Customer service is pretty fast to respond as well.

It really WORKS
I've been meaning to write this review for a long time now but I have to first say that this thing freaking works!!!!!!!!! I bought the back in February of this year. At the time I was having back to back breakouts. As soon and one would start to heal up another would come in. I've only had this happen to me one other time like 2 years ago. I had narrowed down to my job causing the back to back breakouts since I was driving different dirty/dusty vehicles everyday. The first time I got rid of the back to back breakouts I was taking Quantum health SuperLysine+ but I had to take 3 pills 3 times a day which is 9 pills total and I also took 2 to 3 liquid droppers (their liquid version) 3 times a day which was 6 to 9 droppers. As you can see I was desperate and at the time I hadn't come across this product. Even though the Quantum Health pills did end up getting rid of my back to back breakouts. Its cost me a small fortune but regardless I was just happy to not have breakouts back to back. Now I will say I loved the Quantum SuperLysine because I was using it year round and it was for the most part, keeping me outbreak free. Fast forward to January! I'm training for a new job position and guess what happens? I'm breaking out back to back and guess what the Quantum Health SuperLysine is doing..... NOTHING!!!!!! and I am downing bottles and bottles of this stuff and my body had simply grown immune to it. So I'm searching the internet for something new and I stumble across the Virulite. I read the reviews on here and just said F it! I gotta try it and if it doesn't work then it's on to the next! I had it shipped to me overnight. My outbreak was in the beginning of healing so when I got the Virulite, I used it to see if it would heal it faster and I can say it did heal faster with the Virulite then if I used my normal creams alone, which I was still using the creams with the Virulite. The Virulite didn't heal my outbreak overnight, I just noticed a difference. Now once that out break was healed I was still taking the SuperLysine and using the Virulite every 2 hours for about 2 days I think. 2 or 3 days later, I'm up late at night and I feel a cold sore coming in but its small and hasn't started growing yet and you can't tell it's there so I used the Virulite every 2hrs the first day and I can tell it stop it from growing but it did grow a little. My lip isn't tight or itching. It's not even red. The second day I'm still using it every 2 hours and I start to notice its going down but slowly. By the 3rd day I couldn't tell if it was still there or not so I still use it every 2 hrs and I still can't tell if its gone. Now after that I still used it every 2 hours because I'm still feeling like I'm going to breakout again and I want to be ahead of the game. After maybe 3 or 4 more days of using the Virulite to death I cut back on how often I was using it everyday since the outbreaks had stop coming in back to back but I will say I had a tingle on the upper right side of my lip and every time I felt it I would use the Virulite. Even if I felt a tingle 10 minutes after the last tingle and still would use the Virulite again. I think I might have had one more breakout during the middle of my training . It was in the morning when I had sat down for class. I felt my lip getting big. Training hadn't started yet, I had my Virulite in a eyeglass case so I went to the bathroom and used it. I also used it as much as I could get away with throughout the day with no one seeing what I was doing. This time I noticed the cold sore was getting bigger but at a slower rate then it stopped growing and then it's started to go down slowly. It never busted or broke the skin. No scabs. NOTHING! I was so damn happy. After that I made sure I used my Virulite 2 time a day, on my lips and my nose, and anytime I felt tingling I would use it. Fast forward to now, I don't really use it anymore to be honest. I haven't had a breakout in 2 or 3 months and I think I might have had a tingle 2 months ago. Regardless I take it with me wherever I go. I also have extra batteries for it. I remember when I first bought it I wasn't sure if it was working or not because I saw someone's picture of there Virulite lighting up when they took a picture of it and mines didn't do that. But I read on the Virulte website that it your eye can see the light and after the great results I've gotten with it I just want to let the rest of you guys know that no mines doesn't light up when I took a picture of it or at any angle I was looking at it but it does work!!!!!!! Please try it for yourself. I know how irritating and frustrating it is to deal with outbreaks. I've been dealing with them since I was in the 2nd grade. I have no idea how I contracted it. Anyway I hope my review was somewhat helpful to someone and I wish you all the best of luck! If you have any questions I will do my best to help you out.

Haven't noticed a difference but it could be helping?
I still don't know. I fight hormonal cold sores almost constantly. At certain points in the month it's worse than at other points. I usually am able to successfully fight them off, but find it very upsetting that it feels like they're always bubbling up back there. I tried this a couple of weeks ago and didn't notice any difference in the prevention time. It seemed exactly the same experience as when I use all of other things (Valtrex, Lysine, Abreva, Melissa Oil, Oral numbing gel), which I used in addition to this. Still felt like I was fighting the cold sore for a week. There were a couple days where it seemed like I wasn't battling, but now I'm feeling it again. Today it seemed to come within an hour and I just tried using it again. I used it after applying Abreva and Melissa-Peppermint-Maleluca oils. It does kind of feel like it's bubbling down but I don't know if that's the Abreva or the machine. I'm usually too desperate to try it WITHOUT anything else. So far, no impressive real difference, so I give it 2.5 stars, or neutral... I have 2 days left to return it and can't decide if it's made a difference or not. I will probably keep it simply because "what if" it's helping? Both times I used it I didn't get a cold sore, but I've successfully fought cold sores off a hundred times using only the other items listed. Since I used it in conjunction with those items, I don't believe it's made a difference. UPDATE: I don't think this thing works. I used it 3 times over the past few days but a cold sore still developed. Didn't stop it at all.

Saves you a lot of heartache!
Strap in, kiddies. Short story - I've suffered from cold sores since I was a kid, so for nearly 30 years. I bought this product in an act of desperation during the worst outbreak of my life last year. I've always approached cold sores through "prevention" rather than "treatment" because once they're there...they're just kind of they're for the next painful two weeks. So, I started keeping this light in my purse. Whenever I got even a hint of a tingle - could have just been an itchy lip - I pulled this thing out and did the 3 minute treatment. It beeps to start and when finished, so you know when you're good to go. I swear this thing helped keep what would have turned into sores at bay. Nipped them right in the bud when used at the first tingle and then every few hours that day out of paranoia. It runs on a 9V battery that seems to last 6-8 months with irregular usage. Keep batteries at home because goodness knows it's going to run out as soon as you don't need it to. The normally bright green light turns very dull and the beeps aren't as loud, so you'll be clued in when you need to change them. Between this light and a preventative dose of a prescription oral Valtrex/Valcyclovir (go to your GP and get a prescription if you haven't already!), I was cold sore free for almost exactly a year. One managed to sneak up on me during the night recently and I was able to really put this thing to the test. The results are as follows. First sign of the tingle - is it a pimple? is it a sore? Better safe than sorry. Whipped this light out, did the treatment. Looked in the mirror, low and behold, there are a few tiny, tiny blisters in the bottom left corner of my mouth. Cold sore confirmed. For the next three to four days, I used the light every two hours that I was awake. As you can see in the photos, the sore never did blister up beyond its initial appearance. This light stopped it before it could really get started. If you've dealt with cold sores, you know that those pictures are much preferable to a full blown sore at day two or three. What you see in the pictures was flat, occasionally leaky, and seemed to skip right to the 'healing' stage of a sore by the end of day two. Keep at it, don't just use it twice a day. Bombard that sucker. Bonus - this light seems to provide some noticeable relief in any pain or itchiness. I should also disclose that I didn't solely depend on the Virulite, though it was the only 'treatment' I used during this sore (aside from my valcyclovir twice a day and some lysine vitamin tablets). No Abreva. No chapsticks or oinments. That's the 'review' part. Five stars. Worth. Every. Single. Penny. Below, I'll tell you what seems to work for me when dealing with these bad boys. After nearly 3 decades of sores, I'm something of an expert in keeping them in-hand. My go-to treatment plan is as follows. Always have the following: 1) the Virulite 2) an oral prescription and some lysine tablets for funsies 3) suck it up and order *specifically* the Compeed Cold Sore Patches (in the US, you won't find them in stores. Order several packs at a time.) 4) some 91%/high percentage Rubbing Alcohol First step:) Virulite at first sign. First sneaking suspicion. Use this once every few hours. It's small enough to keep on you or in your car or desk. Second step:) Douse a cotton swab in the strong rubbing alcohol (also, if you're paranoid like me, keep some alcohol wipes at your desk or somewhere you can always have them on hand). Don't cause yourself to bleed - it'll swell and look worse than it already is - but rub until that initial blister has popped. Get another cotton swab with alcohol. Set it on top of the blister for as long as you can stand it. Forget 'keeping it moisturized so that this sweet, gentle monster who means you no harm can heal on its own schedule.' Nuh unh. Nope. Burn that sucker. Third Step:) Hit again with the Virulite just for fun. Fourth Step:) Leave it alone. The first day, I like to leave the sore uncovered so that I can really get at it with the Virulite. Occasionally, I'll place another alcohol swap over it. But! Don't keep rubbing, the skin will be tender by this point and you could die. Fifth Step:) EVERY SINGLE NIGHT you should be covering that sore with a cold sore patch. It'll help it heal and keep your pillows and towels sanitary. I rely on the patches mostly at night or if I HAVE to go out for work or errands. Slap one on because this thing will help keep you and the people around you safe(r). Even with the patches on, KEEP YOUR FACE AWAY FROM OTHER PEOPLE. I don't care if you want to kiss your wifey goodnight. NO. Don't even use the same towel as loved ones. Not even during the healing stage. A patch is not an excuse to engage in any behavior that could even maybe spread the virus. And don't forget - you can give it to yourself. Again. In way worse places than your face. You should have the cleanest hands you've had in your life when you have an active sore. Changing baby diapers? For goodness sake, put on some rubber gloves before you touch that bundle o'joy or pass her off to the partner. Repeat the above steps right through the healing process, nixing the alcohol at your judgement. My golden rule for my loved ones is that I wait a week until the sore is GONE - as in disappeared, not healing, not almost gone - before engaging in any contact, whether that sharing food or kisses or *ahem* kisses or whatever else. Be clean. Be ruthless.

I didn’t believe it but it works! Gotta use it asap
The first time I used this, my cold sore was on day 4 it didn’t really help much because the sore was full blown. I used this sooner on the next one and it worked ! It skipped the blister. If you use this by day 2 it will stop your cold sore. Update: if you own one, make sure you use fresh batteries each time. Pay attention to the light. If it’s not as bright anymore, time to change the batteries!

Haven’t had a coldsore since using!
This is the quickest and most effective way to prevent coldsores / speed up healing time for coldsores. Without it I get coldsores from weather temperatures / stress / being run down. With this, as soon as I feel a slight tingle I use it and the coldsore doesn’t appear.

Highly recommended
If you can get this device onto sore lips early enough than it can stop the cold sore appearing. If the blister is already out I personally find it heals quicker

Didn’t work for me
I’m very disappointed in this product. I felt the cold sore tingle and ran for my Virulite right away and I still ended up with a cold sore. I used the light about 4 times within 8 hours and still a big cold sore came up. I was hoping that at the very least, the cold sore would come out smaller but it came up just as large as it would had I not used the light. I am very upset at how much this item costs and the fact that I am unable to get my money back. I’ve been dealing with consistent cold sores for years and I thought I found my saving grace but all I did was waste almost $200.

You should buy this
Do you get cold sores? Then put this in your cart now. Yes it’s expensive. Yes it’s worth it. I used it at the first sign of the sore, it never oozed from the blisters, it never got red and angry. I covered it with make up and couldn’t event see it. It was completely gone in 4 days. Worth all the pennies.
