Is it possible to remove the swivel eye?

The swivel is a screw that is welded in, so you would have to cut it with a thin saw blade to remove the swivel.

Do these lock in place? I’d like to use with bird feeders.

No they don’t. I use them for bird feeders but you have to hang the pulleys with one cord and use another to go over the wheel to move the feeder up ad down.

Does the shaft run on ball bearings?

No it doesn't have a bearing of any kind. It has kinda like a rivet that the wheel rides on, that is made of the same material as the rest of the pulley. I would call it a pin with the ends rolled off to hold it together... sorta like a rivet but not quite that.... anyways.... It appears to be a very solid pin and I would say that it is capable of holding a lot of weight. It isn't a lightweight sorta pulley at any rate though.... Weight value of this pulley is good because of that but I have seen where someone answered that question and his answer was 77 lbs. Not sure I would trust it with that much weight for any significant amount of time..... like a few minutes with something expensive that it is supporting... LOL. I would trust it with less than half that for way longer though, even to hold 30 lbs each would be no sweat for these pulleys. They are rather beefy for the pricetag.
